Hijacking threads

Posted by Justherself54 on August 22, 2008, at 15:28:30

I know this is and continues to be a problem. I can see where some posters of the original thread get angry and fire back with a knee-jerk reaction. If they are new to babble, they probably won't come back. It makes one feel ignored. On a personal level, I feel ignored enough so it would take all my civility skills not to fire back and do the correct thing which is ask to have the thread get back on track.

I don't know why people hijack threads. I've seen them turn into a chat sessions that have nothing to do with the original tread. It may not be uncivil to hijack a thread but in my opinion, it's rude.

If I've offended anyone, my apologies in advance.

I am not offended..I've seen it happen enough to be very aware of it and what bothers me the most is that sometimes it is senior members who start chatting in someone else's thread.

Maybe we could pay a bit more attention to what a thread is really about??

Yes, I agree..it just really bothers me to see a person get blocked even after they've indicated the thread has gone off topic, they are totally ignored, and then comes the knee jerk reaction and they are the ones who get blocked. I know the civility rules must be adhered to, but it doesn't quite seem fair.

Maybe a little blurb in the welcome part of each board about being careful not to hijack threads would help? Just a thought.

I have also seen posts where a poster has requested that if someone posts something in terms of questions, concerns, whatever... that lean towards a personal nature (especially a question) .... maybe it would be best and would better meet the diverter's needs to begin their own thread(s). I did not think this was an uncivil request but I have seen it sanctioned as such....

My only warning was when I objected in the past to someone Hj--- my thread. Even the H word itself was enough to get me a warning. I can't remember if I got PBC or just a warning and it was here on Admin. Where I thought it was safe to ask about this very topic. It was a while back. No closure on the issue but maybe just maybe it will be address now.

(I will not hold my breath)

And offensive jokes do not get a PBC. hmmmmm. Makes one think, doesn't it?

I think there was a time here when a number of posters really enjoyed seeing a post start on one topic and end up on something completely different and unforeseen. I realize this is a separate point of view from the one currently under discussion here.

I was one of the posters who used to be thrilled when threads took unexpected, delightful turns. There was at times a very light-hearted, playful, creative quality about it. Because the posting volume was much higher then, with dozens of posts per day, threads could move into all sorts of unforeseen areas, and then wind their way back to the original topic. Sometimes one or two new threads would be "hatched" in the process as people explored different views and topics.

thread hijaking doesn't bother me at all, in fact it seems like a unstated rule in the cyber world which not everyone is even aware of.

I also like how threads can grow and take turns all over, it is kinda like social discussions.

It is kinda like interupting a conversation, isn't it?

I don't like to see a poster's questions go unanswered. Why go on a thread if you're not going to give some input to the poster? And when the poster complains that his questions are being ignored, they're told to repost their questions again or start another thread at the bottom. Like, what is that all about! If the original poster has his questions answered, then have some fun with banter and chit-chat, or better still pop over to social and allow the thread to retain it's integrity.

i totally agree with your thoughts. i feel i am very often guilty of said thread hijacking, but i simply can't help it. i feel that, in my own wierd way, i have my own sense of 'helping out' and adding input, but i still end up talking about pickles, bacon, mister kk, getting mister bob drunk and making out, ect....

my only hope is that somehow my oddball stories come together to form some sort of psuedo wisdom (dear god, i know i didn't jsut put that!!!) or at least laughter or something to help out.

i am what i am, you know? and i tend to steer a depression conversation into one about shoes in 2 seconds flat (no pun intended!).

i certainly hope that's not rude. it's jsut my 'style' and most certainly not with the intention of hijacking anything (unless of course the thread has lots of money included in it!!)

just my thoughts, which seem to change every second of every day!!!
