Dr. Bob, is there any way that the feature that allows us to get email notifications of new posts in a thread could be redesigned so that one could "sign up for" this for a thread without having to make a post to that thread?

It's not perfect, but someone who wanted to get notifications could change the subject line to "subscribe" or something similar, then use the "nm" option.
One benefit would be to save people from clicking on a post, only to find that it only says, "I'm signing up for notifications" or whatever, but it would also indicate the level of interest in the topic under discussion.
It's just a thought..
