How do the deputies know when a poster posts under multiple names, or when a blocked poster posts under a different name?
On Social there is a poster who was blocked for posting under a new name. How did the deputies know this?
There is a certain blocked poster who occasionally posts messages on Admin using a different name. Her messages are deleted on the basis that she is blocked and therefore not allowed to post. How do the deputies know it is the same poster?
Do the deputies know the IP addresses of posters?

If deputies have access to IP addresses of posters, what's to stop a disgruntled deputy from using this information destructively?
I do not feel safe posting on Psycho-Babble anymore.
Goodbye.

What's an IP address?
Let's say you had 2 computers.
Could you then have 2 posting names?
If you get my drift.

Sigi when new to babble we had two computers and Greg wanted to post from one with his own name and Bob said no. See they are routed meaning we have the same ISP internet provider. Some people go to different locations and then post. Like a library then I don't know . Do you have two servers? Love Phillipa

See Dinah's answers to Phillipa above.
We don't have access to IP addresses AT ALL. Think of how Babblemail works - sends to email addresses but neither party knows those addresses only the server "knows" anything. So, as Dinah said, we have tools that allow us to do this, without the actual information.
Also, in the case of some blocked posters, often they don't try to disguise who they are, or even post in such a way as to clearly show who they are, so the use of the tools isn't essential. I don't suppose this will help, but just in case, I don't know of one time - ever - where we have deleted posts of a blocked poster, only to be notified in the future they were not a blocked poster. I am able to feel comfortable with that sort of a track record. If deputies were unsure, we would leave the posts on the board and defer to Dr. Bob.
I hope you change your mind. Perhaps when Dr. Bob returns he can answer in a way that will increase your feeling of safety? I hope so.

is it just me or was your reply to james a little condesending? "See Dinah's answers to Phillipa above."
and i thought using "caps" in a post was a no no because it means you are yelling at him?

?? I'm not sure who that is, I replied to a post by 'Jamal Spelling.'
>"See Dinah's answers to Phillipa above."
I saw it as expedient, as Dinah had already explained the same thing to Phillipa [about what we don't have access to,] and so I figured it would be redundant and even annoying for me to write the same thing again. Sorry if you read it any other way.
> and i thought using "caps" in a post was a no no because it means you are yelling at him?
It can mean that, I know. Here, with no underlining, no bold, sometimes when in a hurry I use those for emphasis. Probably I was tired and in a hurry. Thanks for reminding me, though, and in the future I'll use *___* like I usually do, so no one will misunderstand the caps.
Jamal, if you're reading, I wasn't yelling at you. Not my style, anyway :-)

Thanks for clarifying.
I suppose I had a drama queen moment about the IP issue. We're all entitled to an occasional drama queen moment, right?

No, PJ, but I have 2 computers, 3 counting my daughter's laptop.

Then my understanding from a few years back and Bob is no you can only let one person post. Or use one name and let the other sign the post with another name but that is confusing so we chose not to do that. PJ

i read it fine...you said it would be annoying for you to post to xxxxx ,something you already wrote...
how could that statement not be hurtful?
he matters and his questions should be answered with respect.. even if it annoys you~

Oh, sorry if my wording here was so jumbled. Rereading it, parts of both my posts do sound rushed and kinda confusing. And, I do now see a person could have read in my previous reply to you that I meant I thought it might be annoying *to me.* Oops. I meant annoying to *him* [Jamal] to read the same thing Dinah just said. That doesn't make sense to me now either! And, oh...now I remember, I thought Dinah's explanation was nice and clear, so I'd better not restate and risk confusing the issue. I do tend to get wordy!
Good point - maybe I made it harder for him, saying "go read another thread." I figured since it was just a bit above this one, it was easy to find, but that is an assumption. Just shows what being in a hurry and tired can do to reasoning powers!
Sorry, Jamal.
> how could that statement not be hurtful?
I guess with a charitable interpretation of my style of writing, motives, and intent?
> he matters and his questions should be answered with respect.. even if it annoys you~
Yes, he does and they should. I thought I achieved that, judging by his response to me ???
Nothing about answering Jamal's question annoyed me.
Thanks for getting me to stop and examine my choice of words and phrasing - it's hard to get it right here and I always welcome constructive criticism so I can communicate better the next time :-)
