Politeness is a high value here

Posted by Squiggles on March 19, 2006, at 8:59:15

I've come and gone to Dr. Bob's because
it is such an encyclopedic resource of
psychiatric information. I have found that
it is very important to be polite. It is
also human to be less capable of emotional
restraint when you are very ill. Paradoxically,
that is the time you are most likely to
seek help in a possibly, socially charmless way. So,
if you want to get the help, be polite. This
is not your doctor's office, but it may provide
practice for precisely the same requirements
in your doctor's office. It may be a cultural
thing too.

Thank you Dr. Bob and helpers.

Struggling through the slammerino as
politely as I can. It's a pain the ***** for
my family too. :-)

Of course, the flip side is that the other posters are also emotional help recipients, not doctors, and are as vulnerable as the poster. So while your psychiatrist is presumably in a better place to absorb whatever you throw at them, your fellow posters may not be.

Using, of course, the gobal you.

I don't have a psychiatrist - i have
a GP whom i see once a year and i always
go with my little paper of questions and
notes. I stay for 3 minutes at most. I think
he appreciates my attempt to be polite
and succinct. And I will try to practice
the same manner here.

Thank you for the feedback.
