Experiences Board?

Posted by Berberis on January 8, 2006, at 8:10:37

I wonder if this has been suggested before at this site.

Where would I post if I wanted to talk about my experiences not related to meds or any of the other boards? For example, if I wanted to discuss what it feels like to be bipolar and my experiences related to that? At another support website, they have separate boards for different diagnoses so alike people can relate to one another who have that specific illness (but I don't care for that other site because profanity runs rampant). I wouldn't think separate boards for different diagnoses would be necessary...just one board for experiences and anyone who wanted to talk about what it feels like to have depression, OCD, BPD, Schizophrenia, etc.

What if someone wanted to let others know about their hospital experience? Might others be curious what a psych hospital stay is like?

I don't think others here want any of this on the Social board (which most seem to want to stay light-hearted and not too serious).

What do you think?

There's already an "Eating" board which is used mostly by people with eating disorders. Why aren't there any other boards for other disorders?

hi Berberis.

frankly I don't have a problem with the way Social is currently set up. I suppose I take Dr.Bob's definition of "general support and 'just' being social" as giving me an adequate picture of what materializes there. I also worry about the way DSM constantly expands the range of diagnostic classification as putting people into more boxes than strictly necessary for effective treatment.

my Social life is not all that lighthearted anyway and I would fear that if I posted about it I might be redirected to Distress or Social Phobia or whatever other DSM-congruent board. In the words of "The Breakfast Club", my social life may be "demented and sad," but it is social, and I'd hate to see it redefined. (In case anyone is wondering, I am joking. That destroys the joke, but irony may not be a desired commodity at this point in Babble history.)

yeah, that is a hard call and who can really define what is social and not. the only thing i could come up with was when it deals w/ suicidal thoughts or similar feelings that the psych. board would be the place but????????????????

I'd say Social. For now, anyway. You could also think of it as General, or NOS. :-)

FWIW, I still think Social ought to be renamed Community. :)

I agree, Dinah. Much more fitting.
