how did you manage to direct the header to all three of us???

You have to have NumLock on, and it only works with the number keypad on the right. Set the cursor where you want the symbol to be placed, and while holding down the Alt key, do keystrokes 175 on the number keypad. Voilà!
Check for codes in Character Map. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map
Click on desired symbol, and code shows at bottom right. Or just use Select button, and Copy.

The light has to be on.....

7 is home if numlock is *not* on.

I think you just didn't really have numlock on.
