Open Query

Posted by saw on January 27, 2005, at 3:57:58

Can anyone simplify how to use Open and the Chat Room?

I have just joined but I don't seem to be able to get to the chat room. What software is needed for chat (I downloaded something it asked me to) but nothing happens and it keeps jumping back another page that says "enter chat room"

I am normally good with figuring my way around this sort of thing but must have my dunce cap on today. Any advice would be appreciated?

Sabrina

I can get to the chat page by clicking on chat on the left hand side when originally going into open. An olive green type page appears with an area for chat and chatters. But the minute I try to do anything there it jumps to another screen which I don't think is related to babble's open. I have downloaded ActiveX (whatever that is) and Java or something. I have enabled these on my security settings.

Gee, feeling stoopid.

Thanks rainbow

I follow the same steps.

The chat page stays blank for a while and then switches to another page to re-enter various other chat rooms.

This was in the URL "An error occurred when the applet was communicated with the chat server"

What's an applet?

Did someone create chat rooms out of apples?

I really would love to be part of open

I really don't know what an applet is, but I suspect it might be a mini-application? Like a mini program that does a certain specific thing. So if you can't load the applet, maybe you are missing a vital function of Open?

Which is a shame. :(

AN applet is a program within java, it has to do with images and stuff I believe thst It pretty much decodes any applets (programs in java) and then my understanding is it transfers them in to you computer which i using java.

I can't use open because work blocks applets.
(IMO they are baby apples, ha ha)
:-)

If applets are ok you should be able to see visual pics on this link. Otherwise, no pics just text.

Okay so that is bollocks.

I was told that the pics worked because of applets. So if applets wasn't enabled (or whatever ya call it) then you couldn't see them. I couldn't see them before, but now I can. But still can't use open.

Ah well, I always wanted to look at visual representations of sorting algorithms..

Hmm. How interesting (not).

Sigh.

I have java already and I have enabled all the various little thingy's etc. I'm starting to think that there is something "missing" from my setup so that I can't participate in chat sites.

Of well, it was worth a try

And I may be way off track, but could it be a possibity that I can't chat because my email address on yahoo is different to the one I registered with at babble?

IT is not one of my strong points

alright.... # 1) do you have a fire wall enabled?
this can cause chat not to work..

2) are you using a recent internet explorer ar netscacpe?
let me know what u r using and what version and ill give u hopefully useful steps to follow
:-)
I think it is just a small glitch that can easioly be fixed, i might suggest redownloading java, it can't hurt

I think that's the standard chat fail error. I'm not sure it means anything deep at all. I get it several times when trying to enter chat, but if I keep trying I eventually get in. My computer didn't change in the meantime, so I figure it's the forces of Yahoo, mysterious and unstoppable.

Of course, I'm a technologically enfeebled so take anything I say with a grain of salt.
