Babblemail is great, but.....

Posted by Larry Hoover on July 26, 2004, at 10:12:42

Could you please add a Babblemail button to each board, just like the links at the top and bottom of each page, that let you move around Babble?

Thanks,
Lar

That would be great. I have a hard time finding it sometimes.

And while we're working on a "wish list" it would really help to have "next" and "previous" links on the message pages. If I'm playing catch-up, I'd just like to read sequentially and I'm always having to scroll down to find the link.

Could ANY PB'er now email me??

Thing is, while I would adore to have contact with 90% of the people here, I really wouldn't want contact from some others. Is it an opt out system?? Can I opt out totally??

You have to opt IN. The default is no Babblemail.

Here's a message I just posted, with a detailed description of how it works...

You're a STAR!!

Thanks. I could work it all out for myself, but brain power is soooo low at the moment I couldn't face following a few links! *l*

Thanks Larry!

I don't know what's up with that. I just opened that post ten minutes ago.

My guess is that somehow in trying to help Bob understand that his subjects are using and liking babblemail some words may have been used that didn't fit the civil test.

My very fuzzy recollection is that it was a thread on psycho. that had to do with how a poster finds out ISP or routing mail info and a written/verbal threat.

Just my guess here as I could never dare to presume I know what goes on in the head of Hsiung.

Did it include info that isn't in Dr. Bob's instructions? Either that or he thought it was a duplicate of the thread here is all I can think of. Maybe he's going to do one of those mass post transfers to Admin.

Lar - Don't you point your little pointy things at ME buster! If you wanna talk to da man...talk to da man!

Anyhow, I'm sure he is toooooo busy apologizing to Dinah for not telling her that he was out of town, and for leaving her stranded with no way to contact him! I'm convinced that since he is a gentleman, he is on his knees being very humble, and kind, and he is dialing the florist right now!! :-)

I would love to get on Babble mail. I hope that Dr. Bob will post how to get it.

Thanks for sharing, Larry.

Ooops! Sorry. But I don't mind if you point your little pointy things at ME.

I didn't meant to select the "point at Emmy" button. I was flustricated, I guess.

How do you see those numbers?

How do you all see the post numbering? I don't see those numbers.

I did a mass purge of my email account when I closed the other one, and apparently lost his notification. I *thought* I had read everything first. :(

And if anyone else didn't get a reply from me recently, that's probably why as well.

Another reason not to "select all", I suppose. I just figured if I went post by post, I'd never throw any away.

I've been on Babble too long. I meant email by email of course.

Poor timing for an unaccustomed cleaning binge, isn't it?

Here's a copied version of that missing post:

> Several people here have set up yahoo email addresses so that they can communicate privately about personal issues - or just become friends, without giving away too much information. We, too, are leery of that.

I just want to take this opportunity to recommend a new feature of Babble, which works beautifully....Babblemail.

To enable it for yourself, you have to re-register (the same thing you would do if you were changing your posting name, password, or email account) and enable Babblemail.

https://dr-bob.securesites.com/cgi-bin/pb/signup.pl

Then, you can go to the Babblemail window, and send a secure message to anyone who also has Babblemail enabled.

http://www.dr-bob.org/cgi-bin/pb/babblemail.pl

Here's what happens. Your email message is sent from the Babblemail server without any identifying features other than your current posting name, e.g. AuntieMel. The subject line shows who it's from, so if you don't know that person, you can just delete it unopened. It also cannot be replied to. You don't have to worry about accidentally identifying yourself by replying. The only way a reply can be sent is for the recipient to open their own Babblemail window, and send a new message. The only flaw is that you'll have to cut and paste text from an email you wish to reply to, if you want that text to appear in your own reply message.

And on it goes. No possible way for anyone to trace it, either direction.

Now, the normal civility rules apply. If someone receives an uncivil Babblemail, Bob asks that you forward the whole thing to him (there is an embedded security code number that he can decode), and the normal PBC and block rules will be applied.

Thanks Lar. I didn't realize that "not enabled" was the default setting, so I just went back in and enabled it. And I agree, there needs to be a link on every page. Because were it not for your post, I would not be able to find it at all!

Thanks again,
gg

The numbers aren't visible if you're using frames, unless you right click on a post, and open it in a new window.

Actually, my long-range idea is to make the posting name in the "posted by" line a link to the babblemail form. To phase out the posting of email addresses:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20011216/msgs/2579.html

In the meantime, how about just bookmarking it? :-)

I've been wanting to do that, too, but I think it's too complicated without having everything in a database...

In the meantime, have you tried the versions using frames?

Thanks for explaining babblemail. Sorry about deleting your post! I'm glad you were able to repost it right away.

They're the last part of the URL and at the very bottom of each page, too...
