Can someone help with a FAQ/How-to for Open?

Posted by fallsfall on June 29, 2004, at 7:16:41

Open has become a regular part of Babble now (and I think that is great!). It is wonderful to talk to people in realtime - both to have fun and to help. But, there does seem to be confusion when someone tries to get there for the first time.

Is there a post somewhere that explains the details? Can we add a section to the FAQ "Everything you wanted to know about Open, but were afraid to ask"? I don't have the brainpower right now to write such a thing, nor the energy to search the archives for it. Can someone else help with this?

My initial list of things we should cover includes:

What is Open?
Who can use it?
What are the "rules" in Open (i.e. civility, appropriateness, etc.)?
What do you need to install on your computer?
What accounts do you need to sign up for?
How do you get there?
What is Piggybacking?
Why do people become "invisible", and how can they be more visible?
Why do people leave suddenly and then come back?
What do you do if you go there and noone is there?

Are there certain computer setups that *can't* get there (I have heard of a number of posters who have not been successful in getting to Open - I think Miss Honeychurch asked about this recently)? Is it different for people on Macs? What fancy tricks should they try?

I'm sure other babblers would have great ideas of other topics that should be covered.

This question is prompted by a post on Social (http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20040626/msgs/361520.html). I have added a post to that thread pointing to this one.

Thanks!
Falls

P.S. If this already exists and I just didn't find it... just let me know. The first place I looked for this information was the FAQ, so maybe we could at least add a link there to whatever already exists or whatever we create.

Falls,
Try searching the archives here. It's been done a number of times with varying amounts of detail. I'd suggest searching on the word yahoo or yahoo and chat since I don't think you'll get too many false hits that way. (Hm. Maybe we're too gloomy here. )

If you find an older post it probably wouldn't hurt to check that the details are still accurate (I think the yahoo changes are mostly superficial) and that the etiquette suggested is to the liking of the new group of chatters.

I was pointed to http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20010718/msgs/1814.html. This is an older post, and it should be verified to be sure that the information is current. I know that we have learned a lot of tricks about Open, I was just hoping that we could collect that knowledge in one place.

Also, this is a bookmark for Open: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psycho-babble-open/chat
