About Excite

Posted by Greg on December 1, 2001, at 11:27:50

Excite filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and officially went out of business as of midnight last night. If you use an Excite e-mail, trash it. Also, if you use the @home cable service it shouldn't be working either as it uses the Excite browser. I contacted @home and they say the service may be down for as long as a week, but that they will credit your bill 2 days for each day of service that you lose.

I'm using AOL, I hate AOL.

It appears that the Excite home page and e-mail addresses are still working for now. But the Excite links to @home are definitely down.

I apologize for the misinformation and promise to do a better job with my homework in the future... :(

Yes -- we are grading you ..........NOT!!!!!

Thanks for the info. I think it is a little confusing on what is happening with Excite, so anything you find out is helpful.

akc,

Wellll, the info that I'm getting IF (notice the disclaimer) it is correct, is that the Chapter 11 filing and resulant shutdown of the @home site was in essence to force a bidding war over the cable modem technology. AT&T currently leases the technology for 300+ million and the owner of it (unknown) thinks it's worth at least twice that. There are four or five other companies interested in leasing it. Somehow they got a judge to OK the shutdown of the site cutting off service to over 3.7 million customers (I think). I still can't figure out the logic in that one. I've attached a link to a CNN article that will give you some info about it and if I can dig up anymore I'll let you know.

P.S. I'll try to get my grade up by mid-terms... :)

If you figure out the logic question, you will get an automatic A+ and graduate with honors.

We got our service back in two days instead of a week. Apparently they figured out that giving 3.7 million people one week's worth of free service wasn't exactly what you would call cost effective...

Even I could figure out the logic in that one.

For Greg and others:

It appears that Excite still will be shutting down according to this story at USA Today (by the end of February). At least this time you have time to plan.
