Arrogance of the elite

Posted by Mitchell on August 31, 2001, at 12:51:52

So you seem to be saying that to participate in this board one must agree to cover up crimes.

You seem to think the interests of your self-styled community are not only more important than individual members or prospective members, but also are above the law of the land. It seems your authority as a licensed physician and your ability to attract a few supporters has gone to your head.

Are you saying it is unfair to notify organizations when people act improperly in their name? Does this mean Dr. John Grohol is blocked for suggeting that he will report you to your IRB in reference to your copyright policies?

Mitchell - Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel. BTW, why did you try to sign in as Dr.Grohol?

One last thing, does this Dr.Grohol have a message board where we can post and pick on him?

Hmm. I'm part of a conspiracy now. This is cool.

Let's see. This is a board that can be read by any member of the public. Pretty open. Bad way to have a conspiracy.

I am glad to be part of the elite -- I've always been stuck up. Probably why I became an attorney.

I think there are at least a few people who have been keeping a close eye on the board notifying publishers of materials when in their opinion copyright laws are being violated. Since I have been on this board (a few months now), it appears to be only one person that has been banned permanently. Not sure I understand all the ins and outs behind this (haven't been willing to read the entire archives), but this is Dr. Bob's board -- he has as much right to determine who posts on this board as those publishers have a right to decide who gets to use their copyrighted material.

Most of all, what I would like to point out -- I'd venture to guess that about 90%, maybe even 95% of what goes on here is what the board is about -- I think it is what Dr. Bob really is hoping for, if I may go this far -- is the support and sharing of information between people -- personal history type of information, not pastes out of journal articles.

So "Mitchell" -- I see you care about something a lot. But guess what -- this board is not going anywhere. I haven't read any juicy morsels in my legal publications about Dr. Bob getting sued and it is unlikely. This thing called the internet -- it is going to continue to grow and evolve. Publishers of information -- they are going to learn how to better protect their copyrighted material so that they can better make money (For instance -- check out what Time magazine just started recently regarding past articles). The people on this board -- some will come and go. Some will stick around a long time and learn how to be more supportive and will become life-long friends. They will continue to share information. And some will continue to get it from copyrighted sources -- sometimes legit, and sometimes skirting the edge of copyright laws, maybe even breaking them. And when Dr. Bob sees that, he will remove the offending material (such as removing passwords). And the board will go on.

I hope someday you will find a way to end your war. It seems such a drain on energy. But I doubt it will be soon. I'll be here. I'm here not for the articles, but for the friendship, the personal stories. And I'll probably respond when you post. Never can resist the bait!

I feel abused by an overpayed professional whose primary concern is his pride and his following of sheepish yes-people. I remember now where I have seen that expression in his vacation photo - the one with his chin cocked tensely to one side while he deviously invades someones space with a camera - I've seen it on toddlers when they hold a small animal too tightly, mimicking the kind of overweaning affection they learned from their controlling parents.

> BTW, why did you try to sign in as Dr.Grohol?

No

> One last thing, does this Dr.Grohol have a message board where we can post and pick on him?

Yes

Nobody's making you stay, but if you do, please be civil, otherwise, I'll need to block you from posting. Thanks,

Bob
