Has anyone tried this amino acid which is a precursor of dopamine. I tried it many years ago after someone on this site suggested it. Anyway, I was recently on IV Ketamine and was still having Suicidal ideation but after adding the DL I have not had any SI since. It has been for at least 3 months now. I think it is making the difference. Unless the Ketamine finally kicked in. I think it is the DL though.

I've never taken DL-Phenylalanine on it's own but I've gone long periods drinking 3 to 5 water bottles of crystal lite a day. The main ingredient in that is Aspartame which breaks down (in part) to L-Phenylalanine.
I take Marplan (MAOi) and hadn't realized there aas a potential interaction originally. However when I stopped drinking it I feel like my mood dropped. I started a thread about whether or not it helped here: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20140328/msgs/1063549.html
That's not specifically what you're asking about but....
Glad you're feeling a bit better regardless of the reasons!

Yes. I would concur that Phenylalanine is a good supplement. There is a related compound phenylethylamine, but it is more stimulant like and has a very short half life.

dpla i was taking for months, it had defintate benefits to mood, i was more excited about things, and mood improvement. But somethign happened, i started to lose memory and ... it shouldnt be mixed with zyprexa, it causes tartive dykesia when mixed. And i was taking up 4000mg or more for a while, it benefited mood increasingly but after a whil i had cogntive problems, memory shortage. I discontinued and never taking it again.
but for other people....dlpa is almost small version of psychostimulant. It increases dopamine, and mood very much. It's also good for opiate withdrawl

I only take half of a 500 mg pill. I am not aware of any interactions with other meds as I take Nardil and low dose Seroquel and Ritalin. I am my own best judge of medications. I no longer blindly take what my doc orders and he has given me a wide berth to steer my own ship. My depression started at age 14, was on no meds until around 30 and have had the best results on Marplan and Nardil. I have had TMS and recently IV Ketamine. I am also a nurse and know how far to go with meds after years of experience. There is no question or opinion about this devastating disease I have not asked or answered for myself and others. I do draw the line on dosages and refuse to take high dose meds, esp atypical antipsychotics. Thats my story and I fight the battle everyday to live. Like so said the DL Phenylalanine has stopped my chronic SI unlike anything else. I wanted to share that for anyone who suffers with that. I will try anything and have no fear of dying.

Wow I'm surprised you take it w/ Nardil but awesome if it doesn't cause any bp spikes.
There's a new DNRI coming out in July for Narcolepsy (FDA just approved/DEA just scheduled IV). Solriamfetol/Sunosi. It's was derived from Phenylalanine:

I did this, too with Nardil. i was 95% depression free for a few months there. Then BOOM psychosis when i went off the supplements.

You are on a lot of meds so you must have to be careful with adding more to your mix. My goal was always take as few at the lowest dose possible. I always felt that in the long run a lot of these meds could destroy your mental and physical health. Of course we have to take a few but I try and draw the line at 3 lately, not including supplements or meds for other conditions.

There could be synergy between the nardil and phenylalanine. There is some literature on the combination of selegeline and PEA (a metabolite of phenylalanine). Essentially MAO-b breaks down PEA (which has stimulant like qualities) hence it prolongs the effect.
I am able to combat deep fatigue with the combination of PEA and the herb Fo-Ti (an MAO-b inhibitor).
