Odd Question: Spider Bites more risky w/ MAOi?

Posted by PeterMartin on June 26, 2019, at 1:25:41

This is probably just paranoia on my part but I'm on an MAOi (Marplan/perhaps Nardil again later). I live in an area w/ spiders and while it's incredibly rare to come across any there are a couple poisonous kinds.

Am I in much greater risk from the venom of a spider like a widow or (worse) a snake because I take an MAOI? If I were bitten would anti-venom be risky?

Thanks for any help.

Now your making me worry about something else. Why do you think this? I take MAOs too so Im really not gonna worry. If I die I do, that is my reaction to anything that might be worse than depression. I do not believe there is a worse condition at least for me. When the time comes It comes. I am a nurse and very few things scare me anymore. Seriously.

Only if the venom contains aged cheese. I understand your worry about spiders, but, in the scheme of things, I would be more concerned, for myself at least, being on the Big N, about cheese in restaurant food because it is omnipotent and cheddar and monterey jack have given me the high blood pressure reaction, while other types have not.

I had spontaneous hypertension w/ Parnate (anything over 30mg and my BP would start to spike high after each 10mg dose).

Took Nardil for a year and didn't have any issues w a few tiny flakes of cheddar (say Taco bell or a shred or two on a house salad at the local steak place).

I have never noticed a hypertensive reaction to anything food related while on Marplan (2010 to now -1yr).

Just wanted to know what to do just in case....

(And sorry Stargazer :) It definitely is extremely unlikely but had a spider in the house the other day. I'm sure it was just a big house spider but it got me thinking....)

I know nothing about spider venoms, but if you go to the hospital for a venomous spider bite they might give you Demerol for muscle cramps or pain which is another risk altogether.

You could carry Nifedipine with you and take about 5mg if you go hypertensive. But not too much because then you have the problem of low blood pressure

Its a bit tricky as they are liquid capsules and they come in 10mg. 10mg was too much for me. I drank and ate everything and I never went hypertensive. The only time I went hypertensive was when I took megadoses of Nardil.
