Hi all,
Does anyone know if you take extremely low doses of Zyprexa, say 1.5mg, (long-term) would you still have all the risk of weight gain and metabolic problems?
When I took it before years ago, I responded to 2.5mg with an improvement in my mood, but then also had the increase in appetite with weight gain. At some point, the doc had pushed it up to 5mg (I don't have all the records anymore) so I don't know if the problems began at 2.5mg or 5mg.
I feel I could possibly get a response at 1.5mg though. And I wonder if the weight gain/appetite would still come into play?
Has anyone tried just the 1.5mg? Or stayed at 2.5mg without weight gain?
Thank you for any help!
Roslynn

i don't know, honestly. i had a former shrink who said she didn't start people on zyprexa or symbyax, but she'd refill if they were stable and doing OK on it.
according to her...even if one doesn't gain weight on zyprexa, it can still cause metabolic problems. no weight gain, still develop diabetes type II. awesome.
is taking metformin with whatever dosage of zyprexa an option at all?

I take Metformin and have read studies that it will prevent Zyprexa weight gain. They even just found out that Metformin reduces your risk of heart disease (can reverse damage):

"The commonly used diabetes drug metformin could reverse the harmful thickening of heart muscle that leads to cardiovascular disease, according to a study at the University of Dundee."

Here's one study that shows Metformin limited weight gain by Zyprexa. I've seen others where people didn't gain at all as well:

So could you start metformin right away with Zyprexa or would you need to wait until you have signs/tests showing diabetes?
Thank you,
Roslynn

If you don't have diabetes which I hope, it would have to be prescribed off label. Let it be known that you need a healthy kidney for this and you need to test it every couple of weeks. There is a very rare side effect called lactic acidosis and it's not good at all! It can be detected in a blood test and you would have time to react. I think its more likely to die in a car accident, but at least buckle up.

You need to monitor for renal failure.
