What's Trazodone, why I've never heard of it.....

Posted by Mtom on September 26, 2016, at 7:38:52

Very summarized history (long as this post this). Mid-aged female, started experiencing depression suddenly years ago. Last 3 years worse. Can't take antidepressants or supplements with similar properties eg 5HTP - agitation/anxiety (sometimes severe), mood swings, brain-fog, even serotonergic reactions. Scarier than the depression. Tests years ago showed Stage 1 Liver P450 enzyme system not functioning correctly, may be reason for intolerance.

Sleep issues have been increasing. Dr. prescribed very low dose Trazodone for sleep only, says dosage (25 to 50 mg) too low for antidepressant effect (but remember I'm super-sensitive). Been reading it is an atypical antidepressant. Should I risk it? What are typical and rarer side effects? Don't want to feel worse. Why have I never heard it mentioned by Doctor or others I've discussed anti-depressants with?

Hello.

I only have a partial answer for you but I do have experience with Trazadone. I, too, was prescribed it as a sleep aid.

I don't respond well to standard a/d's either. SSRI's in particular cause me to feel very anxious with no benefit.

I found Trazadone to be very effective for sleep. However, I always felt like I had a hangover the next morning. I had to ditch it. As far as its popularity as an a/d, I hear its not often used for that purpose as its not very effective. That may be why you haven't heard of it.

Good luck!

trazadone is notoriously used in psych hospitals as a first choice sleep aid, it's an antidepressant but it works more on making you sleepy......some people do take trazodone in the day as antidepressant, but it' sedation can cause difficulty in working, it depends on how the person responds to it....

it comes in 50mg-300mg and mainly is used at night as a sleep aid......it's not euphoric, just suttles you to want to go to sleep.....

Hi MTom,

Trazodone worked well for me for a few months for sleep then it stopped working. Pdoc switched me to a very small dose of Seroquel for sleep after I left her a rambling message after I was up for 36 hours.

Good luck.

the only person I've known on trazodone for depression was a lady with schizophrenia...supposed to help negative symptoms or something. I dunno.

As a sleep aid, I think its fairly standard. I don't like it myself...the sleep wasn't refreshing in the least, I felt drugged the next day, whine whine whine. Some people swear by it for insomnia.

In what ways does Seroquel at a dosage of 1000 mg/day help you that lower dosages do not?

Do you think that replacing the trazodone with Remeron might help with sleep and augment Effexor at the same time?

Hi Lamdage - if you're not using it for a sleep aid, are you using it for its antidepressant properties? Is it working?

I take a cyp3a4 inhibitor. (Astaxanthin)

I was pretty agressive once on Remeron. I have thought about giving it another shot, too though.

That makes more sense.

:-)

I never heard of astaxanthin. What does it do for you?
