chest pain

Posted by linkadge on August 25, 2016, at 10:20:45

Hi all,

I have been experiencing periodic chest pain that does not seem to be related to anxiety. I am fairly young (33) and am in good shape.

It seems to occur a nighttime for brief periods of time only (10-15 min).

Basically, I experience no pain until I start to breath in. I can only fill my lungs to a certain point and then I start to feel sharp pain in the chest area.

I have no other symptoms (sweating, shortness of breath).

It disappears after about 10 min, and then I feel ok for a while (could be days).

It could be a heart attack, but it seems to fit the definition of plurasy.

I suppose I should go to the doctor.

If it worries you, you should go to a doctor. I can tell you, having had pleurisy many times, that it's not that. Pleurisy is endlessly painful, usually due to constant coughing of bronchitis or pneumonia and kills when you cough. Treated with antibiotics. But 10-15 minutes only on occasion is most likely some muscular pain. I've had muscle pains that felt like I was having a heart attack and muscle pains that hurt when I breathed deeply. When it happens, you might try getting up and doing movements that work the soft tissues in the chest and ribs and see if you can isolate the pain that way.

Hey Baseball,

Thanks for the response. It's strange that it was quite painful (stabbing pain), but only hurt when I breathed in beyond a certain point.

Oh and lithium.

(some remeron, Effexor and lithium). The remeron and Effexor have been extremely low doses however.

Lithium has actually been in my cocktail when I've had chest pains under my left rib cage. I've taken myself off it (my doctor is aware of and OK with it now). I no longer have that problem although I was never 100% sure that lithium alone would have cause that problem. Either way with it in my cocktail I would get a dull gnawing pain under my left rib cage that very annoying/distracting and I had rub it at it often.....would scare me too (obv "chest pains). GasX sometimes seemed to help - but I don't know if that was just coincidence when I was trying hard to believe it was gastric not cardio related.

If you search my name w. Lithium you'll prob see a post w me talking about chest issues and lithium...

Thanks for the response.

I've wondered if it could be related to lithium. But, like you, I'm not convinced it is related to lithium alone. I wonder if it is due to the combination with another med.

Perhaps it is low sodium or something from lithium (however, I'm only on <300mg).
