I've been taking SAMe for 5 days now and I think I would benefit from adding 150 mg Wellbutrin XL back in. I'm a little weary does anyone have suggestion or experience?
Thanks :)

This combination could be a bit stimulating. Is SAMe giving you any insomnia or anxiety?
Can you start with a lower dose of Wellbutrin?
I don't think there is any direct interaction except for possible overstimulation.

I think Sam-E with wellbutrin is a good idea. I've taken Sam-E with SSRI's, MAOI's and never had a bad experience, except I agree with Linkadge about the overstimulation. Sam-e is a wonderful add-on. I haven't found any other brand that works other than "Nature Made"- Something to do with the enteric coating?? If someone knows of another brand that works please let us know. Good health to you.

SAM-E has been known to increase serotonin more than dopamine, but still it may benefit from combing it with wellbutrin, it will increase some nuerotransmitter levels but one caution is when i took l-tyrosine with bupropion it caused me feel wierd, some kinda of anxiety.....l-tyrosine increases dopamine and norepinephrine, but it can be a risk with bupropion because of the exvess NE
there really should be any cautious action with SAM-E it mainly works on serotonin than dopamine, but still it can enhance antidepressant action

If you've ever had a manic episode be careful with SAM-e. One of my first episodes was triggered in part at least by SAM-e......lots of people take it w.o. issues but if your bp1 Id be cautious....

May I ask what medications, if any, that you were taking at the time?
Thanks.
I hope you are doing well.

Interesting article regarding augmenting medicine with neutraceuticals (first time I've seen that term!).

> - ScottThat was before I was DXed bipolar and before I was ever on any psych meds. I had definitely suffered from depression and anxiety but I never saw anyone about it. It was my 3yr in college (I was 22 due to a transfer) and I had fallen into the habit of smoking pot daily to kinda pass days. I had done that for a few years and shortly after reading about Sam-e (which I think had just "come out") I decided to give it a try. With in a week or two I had a full blow psychotic manic episode (crazy behavior in public - telling people I was god etc).
To be fair I can't be sure the addition of SAM-e was 100% responsible (could have been bad pot or just my time for my illness to come out) but I always think it was a huge factor.
That was 1999. I had a lot of episodes from 00-09 which I finally got serious about totally giving up any pot use, alcohol, anything recreational. I didn't have another episode until last year when I came off Marplan and low dose seroquel and added Belviq. For me my manic episodes always seem to be related to me messing w/ a new suppliment/chemical/etc. After that Belviq episode the hospital I ended up in put me on Lithium which I only been on for short periods before. The next doctor I got after being discharged has kept me on it since that point. I really want to get off it (only 600mg) but he's got the mindset that I need it (or something as strong). Meanwhile I'd gone from 2010 to 2015 w/o (Marplan, Lamictal, Seroquel)....I'm back on those same meds now + Lithium.....I wouldn't say I'm great but we're working on pushing the lamictal a little more than I have before (200 XR now which is my most and maybe to 300 soon).
60 Marplan is what I take and I can't tell if it's helping much anymore. I did well on 2010 through 2015 on only 30.....so I'm thinking maybe I'll try less. I know I mentioned on this forum that going up once during those years led to some spaceiness....maybe I still have that but I'm just used to it.
Not sure I'm rambling off topic but I just am. If there are any words missing or difficult to read sentences it's due to the Lamictal....

>Eeeks!
That might have just stopped me from going to find some SAM-e!I just used the drug.com drug interaction function to see what results putting in fluoxetine & SAM-e would return; nothing.
And I'm really surprised by that.Though I'm diagnosed with depression, my sister is diagnosed with bipolar.
I certainly don't to initiate a first manic episode by trying out SAM-e!
Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Oh i feel you petermartin.
I've never had a manic episode without messing with new chemicals or supplements.
It took me many many years to understand that i need to stay absence from drugs and just go with what my doctor says.
(if it is a good doctor who don't mess around with a lot of sh*t, as a few are. but you get the point.)I think i have manic periods even though my psychologist says i'm not fitting the mall, but i've been om lamictal with success so..
But i'm not bipolar, manic states can be symtoms of other things to, and that is the case for me.
No, you're not rambling. You help a lot of people by writing these sort of things :-)
Thank you!It reminded me to not mess around with supplements without supervision. (i was googling supplements this night actually so thank you, honestly. It could have caused a manic episode and now that i'm working 50%, it would have been stupid of me as i'm doing fine as i am now.)
:-)

Oh Belviq sounded like the perfect recipe for a manic period.
I was reading about it now.But i know the feeling when you want to try a new one that sounds very promising, but you're fooling yourself..
