Tapering off Topamax cause sudden intense vertigo?

Posted by FloydAS on May 6, 2016, at 7:27:03

I've been doing extremely well on Brintellix 20 mg over the past year - probably feeling the best I've felt in a long time. I'm also on Focalin XR 10 mg once daily.

Yesterday I returned home from work and had a sudden and intense bout of vertigo. This is something I've never experienced before. I had the slightest of headaches on the lower back side of my head while this was at its peak.

I decided since I've been doing well and have been on 50 mg twice a day of Topamax for Migraine Disease for about 5 years that I would do a trial run of being off Topamax. I began an extremely slow taper several weeks ago. Yesterday happened to be the last day that I took 12.5 mg in the morning as I had done the rest of the week. Today I'm completely off it.

Until yesterday I had absolutely no problems and no headache. This may be completely unrelated to the Topamax taper, but I thought I would inquire as there was nothing different that I did yesterday as opposed to any other day.

The vertigo came on suddenly and caused me to have trouble walking straight ahead. I kept walking more to the right when trying to walk straight and had to hold onto things and walls to keep from falling. It was quite scary.

Additionally, arm/hand tremors became significantly pronounced for a couple of hours. I already take 40 mg twice a day of Propranolol for Essential Tremor. But my arms and hands were experiencing tremors above and beyond the norm during this episode. I had extreme difficulty holding onto a cup.

My wife thought I might have had a bout of low blood sugar, but increasing some sugar intake did not really help. I decided to lie down and try to get to sleep early. Moderate nausea began but I managed to get to sleep.

Upon waking up this morning I still don't feel right. I'm not nearly as bad as yesterday evening, but sort of a hangover effect.

Any thoughts? Should this be cause for concern? I plan to see how I do the rest of today before reaching out to my doc.

Thanks.

Could it have something to do with your blood pressure? I feel that way when my bp is low.

Just a thought.
