Have been on Parnate most of the time for 30 years with good results.68 years old- All of a sudden diagnosed with arrythmia, and am taking a higher dose bisoprolol than previously (5mg daily instead of 2.5). Now just the firt Parnate 10 mg of the day makes me terribly dizzy, but with stable blood pressure (no hypotension) Here in Costa Rica, no docs know anything about Parnate, (few enough in US). Now a month pretty much without Parnate and very depressed. No dangerous interactions between bisoprolol and Parnate. Dont know if it is the med combination or the arrythmia itself that makes me virtually unable to take Parnate. Very desperate at this point. My only other Psych drug is Klonapin 2.0 mg per day since a year ago. Psych hospitalization for several months in US in 2014, took me off Parnate than back on, and I somehow got back to Costa Rica and had a reasonably good 2015 (even with chronic lower back pain), but since arrythmia diagnosis, I am getting very seriously depressed. Social factors are involved. 68 and single, support group is so/so, retired but try to keep busy. Parnate seemed to keep me going, but even waiting 4-5 hours after the first bisoprolol of the day, doesnt prevent this overwhelming sensation of something akin to dizziness. Doubt that anyone can help but just in case. Thanks Rick

hmmmm...sometimes Ritalin is used in people w/ health problems+depression. Milder than amphetamines, long used for fatigue and depression. Just a thought.

Is your blood pressure stable when you stand from a sitting or lying position. Parnate doesn't usually cause hypotension, just postural hypotension, where BP drops when you stand up. Have you had this checked? (probably you have, but in case not)

I am sorry to hear about the problems. I cant really help but would suggest you talk to you physician about a small possibility that Klonopin may not be helping with the depression. An old experienced physician told me once that Klonopin can make depression occur, make depression worse and make depression even harder to treat then. He said many of his depressed patients did better on Lorazepam which is less potent. I'm prepared for the disputes from the many Klonopin fans hear who say that simply isn't true but that just what I heard so good luck on your journey to recovery. PB

It's true.

I'm not sure about this one.
This stuff doesn't occur with everyone, but the percentage is quite large.

How safe is prune juice with Parnate? I know that dried prunes are not recommended. But what about juice? Its a constipation issue.

Double check me on this. It was posted on an MAOI diet thread so I think it applies but I'm tired :)
Elizabeth was someone who I followed when I was taking Parnate. She seemed to have a good grasp on the diet.
Good luck,
Jade

Hi Rick.
Where did you see that dried prunes were contraindicated when taking an MAOI? What adverse reaction is it supposed to cause? I have been on Parnate and Nardil, and have eaten huge amounts of dried prunes, dried aprocots, and raisins without any sort of reaction. The older lists were overly inclusive, and often just plain wrong.
An example of a food on old lists that is wrong is chocolate. This contraindication was based on a single case in the 1960s. It just so happened that she had eaten cheese the day before. However, the reaction was delayed (which sometimes happens), and coincided with her intake of chocolate.
If you are still reluctant to eat dried prunes, I find raisin bran cereal to be quite effective for keeping me regular. You can try plain bran cereal instead if you feel the need to avoid raisins.
What about using a Metamucil-type fiber supplement?
What other drugs are you taking?
