adrafinil (liver damage)

Posted by rjlockhart37 on February 5, 2016, at 8:44:01

i was researching more on this, and it said that people with liver problems should not take adrafinil, im just edgy i usally take 2 capsules if i need to be awake, but now its saying that it causes liver damage similar to the old drug Cylert

i'm obviously not going to get more adrafinil after this, ill just stick with caffeine. Adrafinil does work, it makes me alert but it's not euphoric, so its drug likability is low, it only wakes you up and makes you alert, small mood improvement but nothing to make it a drug of abuse

does anyone know anything more indepth about liver damage?

rj, I can't find any substantive evidence of liver damage caused by adrafinil/modafinil.

Here's a National Institutes of Health page discussing the subject. I suspect that they created the post because there were so many unsubstantiated internet posts exaggerating liver toxicity concerns with respect to the drug.
http://livertox.nih.gov/ModafinilArmodafinil.htm

I did an extensive search on PubMed. Modafanil (which adrafinil metabolizes into) is used in the treatment for some symptoms caused by serious liver disorders. They'd certainly not be using it if it caused further liver damage.

It is true that 1% of the population show slight elevation in liver enzymes after taking it. I bet you that the population percentage with elevated liver enzymes is higher after Tylenol intake.

If you're still concerned, after reading the NIH web-page which includes this statement, "despite widescale use, there have not been reports of clinically apparent liver injury due to modafinil or armodafinil", you might ask your doctor if your liver enzymes are normal or not.

I really think this is a case of internet myth building.

thanks for your response, adrafinil yes it does metablize into modafinil but not sure if it becomes bioavaibale to be used, im on armodafinil 250mg in the morning and i do take adrafinil to stay alert, but i notice it has some side effects more than armodafinil, anxiety wise, it keeps me alert but sometimes irrtibible

i need to have a blood test done, not even for that but to see about the thyroid and my glucose levels, i havent had a test in a long time......

i don't think ill use adrafinil, it's like a older version of provigil.......but it depends on the person how their biochemistry reacts to it

thank your for your post larry

Hi,

I'm familiar with the adrafinil hepatoxicity issue.

The idea is that adrafinil is more hepatoxic than modafinil, because adrafinil is a precursor that's converted partly to modafinil and partly to modafinilic acid.

So because there are more conversion steps, one could imagine that more metabolites would accumulate and this could be damaging to the liver. But there actually isn't any hard evidence that adrafinil is more toxic to the liver than modafinil.

If you're really concerned, it is remarkably easy to order modafinil online these days. For example: http://www.brainprotips.com/buy-modafinil/
