I saw my pdoc today and she said I could take Tramadol with Geodon. The internet drug checker says there could be a higher risk of seizure, but neither my doc nor my pharmacist think it's a problem.
I have a chronic pain condition that the specialist likes to give Tramadol for. Only 3-4 times a year will he RX hydrocodone. But the Tramadol makes irritable & manicky.
My pdoc's answer is to push the Geodon from 120mg at night to 160mg at night. And if I have to add in low dose Depakote during the day. I can only go up to 250-375mg of Depakote. I had an allergic reaction at 500mg (rash & cancer soars).
I don't have to take Tramadol everyday, but when I do need to take it, I need to stay stable.
I always worry about high (if 160mg is high) dose of Geodon. But I also worry about taking Depakote and frying my liver. So maybe a higher dose of Geodon will bring about the stabilization I need and I won't have to add in the Depakote.
Even though we shouldn't drink on these meds, sometimes I like to have 1 glass of with dinner. My pdoc was really against any amount of alcohol with Depakote. Another reason to stick with Geodon.
Geodon has been a great non-traditional mood stabilizer for me. Are there any risks with taking 160mg? That just seems really high.

The only risk with Geodon is QT prolongation that doesn't really increase with dose.

Thanks, Eric.
Our original plan to up Depakote in order to take Tramadol failed. I love Tramadol, but it makes me manic. And, 500mg of Depakote (all on its on without the Tramadol) made me manic. For some reason the traditional mood stabilizers bring on mania in me. I do better with the AAPs.
So my doc just pushed Geodon to 160mg and I'm doing really good. Geodon takes care of my depression & mania all in one med.
Incidentally, my pain doc agreed to give me an RX for hydrocodone when I need it (which isn't very often) so I won't have to deal with the mania induced by Tramadol.

So far I'm doing pretty darn good on 120mg Geodon with my new add on of 1,000mg Depakote. I'm really surprised at how good I feel on Depakote. I've always been afraid of taking it.
I get blood work done next week.
