bipolar I and lingering psychosis

Posted by Christ_empowered on January 23, 2015, at 18:27:43

I have a diagnosis of bipolar I w/ psychotic features. I have some psychosis despite ongoing Abilify treatment, but its getting much, much better. I also take 1200/trileptal and 100/lamictal. When needed--which isn't often--I take 200-300mgs neurontin and 2-4mgs Risperidone.

In this situation, is there a point at which the AAP can be lowered a bit? Or is 30 Abilify pretty much gonna be it for the long haul?

Also...is there anything I can do to make the lingering, relatively mild psychosis go away faster? I mean, besides throwing more neuroleptic at it?

CE 30mg seems to be your magic number for success. Have you been taking it as prescribed? Phillipa

Christ_empowered,

Sarcosine and N-acetylcysteine might be options for the lingering psychosis. A meta-analysis published in 2011 found that both supplements have therapeutic benefits in the treatment of "negative and total symptoms of chronic schizophrenia" when taken alongside antipsychotics other than clozapine. D-serine might also be of benefit, but I'm not sure if it's available as a supplement. Here's a link to the meta-analysis that I mentioned:

I'm with phillipa, you should stick with 30mg abilify.

Sounds like you are doing pretty well. Maybe with time it will all even out!

Probably yes. The fact you have some lingering psychotic symptoms is also a strong contraindication to dose reduction.
