For the last several weeks, I have been having constant and intrusive thoughts of suicide. I do not feel I am really depressed, as I have been in the past. I just think about/plan suicide. My p-doc said that lithium in moderate doses has been shown to control this. I started on lithium Friday and today (Wednesday) have been free from suicidal obsessions. He also had me up my laminal from 200-300. Anybody have this experience? I hope it's real and not just a temporary placebo effect.

Several years ago, I had the same very positive response to lithium when I was having suicidal thoughts. The dose was low, but very noticeable. Be sure to follow kidney function when on lithium!

I dont think it is placebo. I have this effect with as little as 50mg Lithium carbonate.
Or like 360 mgs of Lithium which i take now. When i forget i realize i forgot when i think about suicide again.

Know that it usually doesnt need much lithium for this effect. If thats the only reason for taking it you might try lower doses.
Just go back up when the effect fades and DONT kill yourself.
Just my two cents. I keep my dosage low to avoid kidney problems that may lead to having to stop lithium.
I dont know where i would be without it!

I havent wasted a thought about suicide in several months now which is pretty significant.
Welcome to life without those thoughts!
I think low dose lithium in drinking water would be awesome.
Makes more sense than flouride. You dont want that anywhere but on your teeth.

Their is a mineral water from Mexico that probably contains lithium. Here they sell it in every grocery store. Topo Chico. Their website doesn't mention mineral content. I drink it everyday along with my Nardil.
The idea of using lithium came from a study that showed people in SW Texas had less mental illness than the national average.
