Since the internet is so full of articles on the dangers of talking benzos what are you thoughts? If taking them. Trying to get some realistic thoughts. Thanks Phillipa

I dunno. I'm taking high dose niacinamide now (down to 6 grams, from 9) and that's better for me than benzos were. Klonopin was rough over the long haul.
That said...all psych drugs have issues. You're messing with brain chemistry. I don't see why people pick on benzos so much. Maybe cuz they're not patented anymore? I mean, if people started some anti-Seroquel or anti-Abilify campaign, that'd be stopped right away, lol.
If I had to choose...like, if I had less severe problems and the choice was: AD for a long time OR a long term benzo, I'd take the benzo. Same with using low dose atypicals for whatever ails you...take the benzo.

Thanks CE my thought is that the atypicals are expensive so down the $5 for a 30 day script. Phillipa

i think they usually go on about how dangerous older drugs are as part of trying to get more people taking newer (more expensive) drugs. then later down the track we hear that the never drugs (now that they aren't so expensive anymore) turn out to be nearly as bad as the older drugs...
i think with the whole dementia thing... it is probably a good idea to try and stay mentally active. instead of letting ones mind float around all the time. if that makes sense.

As I've mentioned before, without benzos our brains might fry in more hazardous juices.

Thought it would be interesting to see how many of us are going to have dementia and Alzheimers? Will you possibly? Phillipa

There are many risk factors which can lead to Alzheimers. Being overweight increases risk. There's probably more people who are overweight than people who have been on benzos their whole life.
If you are worried about their negative effects, have you thought about discontinuing them?

sorry to push my vitamin thing, but...time release niacinamide, time release c, a b-complex, maybe some taurine...helped me *tremendously*. You can still take your benzos, too.

CE this Alzheimer's thing really has me worried. I take a lot of the supplements you also take. But add the loss of taste and smell l0 years ago to this and it's beyound frightening. So what would and can I do? Do you believe all this about benzos and loss & taste? Thanks. Phillipa

I dunno, honestly. I think docs pick on benzos because they're off patent and have had a questionable rep since the late 70s or 80s, when Valium was still the top dog benzo and lots of exposes were done Valium addiction and such. Then xanax turned out to be the crack cocaine of the benzos, on and on it goes.
The way I see it, benzos are just safe replacements for barbiturates. I know docs call them "anxiolytics," but...ummm...they're safe, pleasant, cheap sedatives. I think our culture is Puritanical enough that anything that makes you feel good is regarded with suspicion.
Old school docs regarded meds as poisons. Clearly, they weren't shrinks, lol. Point is...any artificial substance you take for any reason has potential ill effects, short and long-term. My best guess is that a lot of the ADs, AP/AAPs, stimulants, etc., have just as bad, if not worse, long term side effects...
...but we don't hear about it :-(
