Why not?

The venlafaxine might be a touch too much serotonin.

JR,
I am unsure as to what you are wanting to mean here. If you could post answers to the following, then I could have the opportunity to respond accordingly.
True or False:
A. Your prescriber is saying for you to take the two drugs together
B. You have some rational reason to think that taking the two together will lead you out of the depression that you are in, if that is why you are asking about these two drugs to be taken together.
C. I believe, Lou, that I have a chemical imbalance in my brain and that taking the two chemicals together will balance the imbalance.
D. I am aware, Lou, of the chemical make up of both drugs and know that the chemicals are not neuro-toxic.
E. I know, Lou, that the drugs together could increase the possibility of life-ruining conditions and addictions and the possibility of death exponentially to those that take them together.
F. I know, Lou, that the active metabolite in both of the drugs could be the same.
G. I know, Lou, that tardive dyskinesia could happen to me by taking the drugs either by themselves or together
H. I will get these drugs and take them, Lou, if someone here says it is OK, even if my prescriber will not prescribe them to me.
I. Since the owner of this site, Lou, has not flagged that there could be adverse consequences to taking these drugs together, then I think it would be OK to take them together because the owner is a psychiatrist and if there could be adverse consequences to taking them together, he would have posted so.

>is that safe?

Well, that really depends on doses, ECG monitoring, other medication taken, medical history, genetic differences in drug metabolizing enzymes etc. There is no easy answer to that question.

It's a lot easier to answer the question.... is is logical?

In general, no. And it's extremely uncommon to combine those two meds as a result. You see, although clomipramine itself is a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor (amongst other things), one of it's major active metabolites, produced in the liver, is a powerful norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor called desmethylclomipramine... which is actually rather similar to desipramine (the full name for desipramine is desmethylimipramine).

I would not recommend this combination.

>or would taking venlafaxine be better?

Better in what sense? What are you being treated for and why are you considering changing meds?

This is the end of the thread.
