I have often posted here about my son's
schizophrenia treatment. After a useless 2
months on Latuda, he came around quickly
after starting Zyprexa again. 15 mg has been
working, but after an 11 year history with
Zyp. he needs more. The bad part is it's going
to drive his eating habits forward and weight
gain might happen. His Pdoc has suggested to
take monthly injections instead of pills. Does
anyone have experience with monthly Zyprexa injections?

I prefer to take pills. Easyer to control the ups and downs of med. I think the injection is just liquid zyprexa they inject into mucle, and it slowly releases. My fear is towards the end of the month that release would be lower. I am learning not to take it at the same time as alcohol, because it seems to be less effective. I think only brand name zyprexa is in injection. Its a lot more expensive but monthly. Its a good idea if he does not take the pills regularly. Atleast you would know he is getting his medicine!

I looked it up, and...are you sure you want to do the injection? There's the cost issue, and also he would have to be observed for a couple hours post-injection to make sure he was OK...something about sedation or something...
...apparently, the shot form of zyprexa isn't terribly popular.
If the Zyprexa isn't enough, maybe a low dose monthly shot of Risperdal or Invega, plus oral zyprexa? That would make more sense, to me (obviously speaking as a non-MD who's never met you, lol). Just a thought.
Good luck!

Has he ever tried Seroquel? It seems to be the most trustworthy to me in terms of long term side effects.

Bad idea. No flexibility on dosing and you'll still face weight gain issues. What antipsychotics have you tried?

Its $$$, but sometimes adding Abilify to zyprexa helps, at least with the weight gain. Abilify should go generic in a year so (?).

Lying pdoc is ready for the boot. They are telling me the worst lie I can imagine.
They said it was a zyprexa injection but guess what at his office he admitted it's Abilify.
My son did terrible on this drug he already had akathisia from his schizophrenia
Abilify kept him pacing constantly and getting up and going out at like 4 am and me
having to go out and find him in the middle of the night. that was 11 years ago and now
the pdoc is recommending Abilify injections. My son is doing just fine on Zyprexa
thank you very much. We need to dump this Dr.

Tell the doc to wright a script for olanzapine. Get the hard copy on paper and fill it your self. Tell him what happened with abilify and that only olanzapine works.
Why injections?
