SSRI's are *believed* to increase Serotonin?

Posted by hello123 on October 24, 2014, at 19:37:09

"SSRI's are believed to increase the extracellular level of the neurotransmitter serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin in the synaptic cleft available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor."

I got that quote from the SSRI article on Wikipedia. I thought this was basically the one thing that was a known fact about SSRI's?

I think it means that this reuptake inhibition is believed to be the course of action.

It is known that they inhibit serotonin reuptake but it is not known if this is what constitutes their "antidepressant effect".

Please correct me if i am out of line here.

I set that in quotes because for me there is no such thing with ssri. And i have good company!

i think desensitization of somadentritic 5ht 1a receptors is as important, as the inhibition of reuptake, that's why you have to wait some time for antidepresants to work fully

If they do. Isn't there now some controversy over whether they work or not? Just asking P

Topdog

You're right. The SSRI's and SNRI's are for people that are sad.....not depressed. Nardil is the best drug ever created. Just assure you utilize the Gavis brand and all your bottles are sealed with the carbon desiccant inside to stop the medicine from breaking down and you have this sulfur odor when you open the bottle.

I wish everyone on this site would utilize the Gavis Nardil.

I sure would if i wasnt prone to psychosis.

This is the big drawback of Nardil and co. Its very unfortunate.
