Emsam: Fed-up, disgusted with psych meds

Posted by former poster on October 13, 2014, at 8:08:07

Here I am with another sleepless night on EMSAM. 2hrs before bed I removed the 6mg patch, took 3 mg. of clonazepam 0.1 mg of clonidine and all I got was 3 hrs of LIGHT SLEEP! Everyone knows exercise is good for sleep... but not if you are taking EMSAM. I spent the day putting out a forest fire, worked on construction the rest of the day. The previous night I got 4hrs sleep. Thought for sure I'd sleep tonight. I keep going back on EMSAM because its the only thing that makes me feel alive.

I don't think a Thorazine drip would put me to sleep.

If you did all this during the day sounds like at least the depression is gone. Not making light of your non sleep as been there many times. Maybe a higher dose of a benzo? Phillipa

Trazodone perhaps?

Hey, pretty much anyone on MAOI needs sth. for sleep.

You are lucky it works.

A low dose of short acting ap may help. The issue I see is accumulation of phenylethylamine which can be very stimulating.

Psych meds are bad....for whatever reason, the goal has always been suppressing symptoms, not treating any underlying problem(s), so problems with the drugs pop up a lot.

Seroquel? Not ideal, but back in the day, it was common to pair Parnate w/ Stelazine, sometimes in the same pill. The TD risk was kinda high, so I guess they stopped doing it, but...

...yeah. I think a carefully dosed AP/AAP might be helpful.

Hi Christ,

I disagree. I think meds do target some of the underlying problems, for certain patients,

L,
You wrote the above. I am unsure as to what you are wanting readers to think by what you wrote here. If you could post answers to the following, then I could have the opportunity to respond accordingly
A. What underlying problems do psychotropic drugs target?
B. What are the criteria that the certain people have that those underlying problems are helped with mind-altering drugs?
C If there are those subsets of people, and the drugs helped them with an underlying problem and they got Tardive Dyskinesia or another life-ruining condition or addiction or death from the drug, would their underlying condition be better to have than that?

When I took Emsam, I would take 3mg Klonopin, 100 mg Trazodone, 1,200 gabapentin and I'd usually sleep around 8 hours. I normally have a hard time sleeping but this combo helped most of the time.

Maybe you could put the patches on at a higher dose during the day and take them off a few hours before you go to sleep.

Seroquel in small doses helps me-- otherwise nothing does much. But I always take off the patch at night-- which again means wearing a higher dose during the day.

I put the patch on around 10:00am, take it off around 3pm.

Can't tolerate AP's. Dr said they give me a paradoxical effect. Another big issue about AP's that bothers me is the stigma. Trying to keep your medication secret is stressful.

I'd prefer to save the benzos for severe panic rather than build up a tolerance to them trying to get to sleep.

Trazodone sounds like a possibility. Took it years ago. I asked my Dr to prescribe some for me and he would not.

Tried lithium carbonate and orotate a few times. Seemed to help sleep a little but couldn't function.

Gabapentin made me psychotic and gave visual hallucinations.

I'm the same way with Adderall XR. When it doesn't have a tolerance (like taking 30MG instead of 15) I am alive again for about 2 days. He doesn't want me taking more than 30. So I am detoxing off it 10 days before I see him to make 30MG stronger again. It only wrks as needed and he doesn't put me on enough (maybe for a reason). I'd do TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) but it costs $12,000.

Clonidine put me to sleep. Problem is the next day I was lethargic. 1 or 2 weeks later the lethargy seemed to subside it stopped working for sleep.

What does your doctor think would be good for putting you to sleep, if not Trazodone?

I really have gone very well with cycling different methods. Including low potency APs, Trazodone and Ambien.

They all continue to work that way.

>>What does your doctor think would be good for putting you to sleep, if not Trazodone?<<

I asked my Dr that very same question and he didn't reply,

Last time I asked if he had anything new for anxiety and he said Clonidine, so I'm cycling that with doxylamine and magnesium taurate.

Glad to hear you are getting results with your sleeping regimen.

Hope my comment about AP's wasn't offensive. I don't stigmatize anyone that takes them. Unfortunately there is a lot of stigma out there. I have had problems being stigmatized taking clonazepam and a AD med... Extremely humiliating abuse: Lost court cases, temporarily having my kids taken away - ultimate personal insult which gives me anger issues to this day. I can't imagine what it would have been like if I had been on a AP too?

Oh no worries, i am not offended. Its weird that your doctor doesnt reply to your concerns. Especially if you are not sleeping!

I have to put on my act whenever I go out around people that I am a sociable and confident person when inside I'm not at all. Seems I have a problem turning it off and when I go into the Psychiatrist office I can't turn it off. When I tell him I am feeling derealisation it feels like I'm talking about someone else, not me, because I am so different from the person I'm talking about almost feel like I have a split personality. Playing this act for so long I have a problem convincing Drs that I am depressed and anxious.

"Have you tried Valdoxan?"

I've heard of it, but never tried it. Looks good on paper. Side effect profile seems suitable for me. I'll talk to my Dr. Thanks for suggesting it.

Valdoxan isn't available in USA.

Strange thing is:
I recall about 4 years ago my Dr. gave me a prescription for a new sleep med that was a form of melatonin. If my memory serves me correct the name of it was Agomelatine. Later I asked the pharmacist about it, he replied, "it's only slightly more effective than the melatonin supplement". After seeing the price of the prescription I declined to pay, decided to just take the melatonin supplement.

Am I confusing Agomelatine with some other "---melatine"?

Was Agomelatine available and pulled?

Am I tripping??

It can be hard on the liver. Youd need regular checkups.

It gave me horrendous, lucid nightmaires.
