chronic pain, depression and sleep

Posted by dederocks on August 5, 2014, at 15:01:40

I am dealing with chronic pain from interstitial cystitis along with urinary frequency and lack of sleep. This causes me to be depressed. Trying Elavil at 12mg. and has helped curb some of the pain and sedate a bit. However, I am now constipated and am experiencing some urinary retention along with a very dry mouth. I know that TCA type antidepressants are best for my type of nerve pain, but any other suggestions that have less side effects?

Ummm...I'm not a doc, but here goes...

...I like Tofranil (imipramine, imipramine pamoate if you have good insurance) more than Elavil. Sedating at night (once daily dosing), not hard to titrate, covers multiple bases for me. I think its as effective as Elavil, just not as popular and probably more stimulating....

...Pamelor? Vivactil? Those are more stimulating. Tofranil/Tofranil PM will help you sleep at night.

Maybe...

...Cymbalta? Its generic now. You can go above the 60mgs/day recommended for everybody. I was Rx'd 90, some people are on 120.

That's all I have for you, lol. Good luck!

Keppra and Lyrica both treat nerve pain very well without the anticholergenic side effects.

I've recently been dealing with treating those three things. One thing I would say is, make sure your psych and your primary care are in contact w each other. Finding an effective and SAFE combination of meds for pain/depression can be tricky. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and encouragement. I am researching a psychiatrist who can help me with medicating for pain, sleep, and depression. So far that Elavil is still helping but it is constipating. Again, I appreciate all of your inputs. Blessings. Dederocks
