So my father keeps telling me that my state of suffering is probably genetic and it annoys the hell out of me.
Whats the deal with genetic testing?
I want to know the truth

it is possible for genetically identical twins to have one individual who suffers from depression or schizophrenia while the other twin remains unaffected.
in other words: you couldn't predict on the basis of their genes which twin was affected.
(I think. epigenetic stuff might well complicate this... perhaps there is such a thing as an epigenetic profile? i don't know...)

There is no genetic test for depression or schizophrenia. That doesn't mean that the disease is not genetic.
The problem is that depression is not a single disease. It manifests itself in many different ways from individual to individual. Treatments and response rates also vary dramatically from person to person. There are likely dozens of genes which may predispose an individual to a mental illness. There are also likely protective genes too, which offset the risk of having a certain disease related gene. As mentioned above, certain genetic predisposition may only become active if an individual experiences stress.
So, no unfortunately, there is no test (at this stage) to determine whether an individual has depression or schizophrenia.

So stress is the key? I always thought that if a family member had same that you could also. Phillipa

I know there are genes associated with schizophrenia.
I also know its not a test to determine wether or not you have schizophrenia, but to determine wether or not you have genes associated with schizophrenia
This is the end of the thread.
