How Does Remeron Make You Gain Weight?

Posted by Babbler20 on May 18, 2014, at 21:28:00

Does anyone know how Remeron makes you gain weight? Does it simply make you eat more or does it slow down your metabolism? My doctor said it makes you gain weight because you eat more, but he also told me he has an 80% success rate with TMS, so I don't believe anything he says

It also directly affects one's metabolism.

The current thinking is that psychiatric medications tend to elicit weight gain via a combination of antagonism/ inverse agonism at histamine H1 receptors and serotonin 2C receptors. However, not all medications that possess these characteristics cause prominent weight gain. It is a complex phenomenon that other pharmacodynamic actions likely play a role in.

Remeron antagonizes the 5ht2c receptor. this has Been shown to increase hunger. and there is a new weight loss med out called Belviq that is an agonist at the 5ht2c receptor. and Belviq decreases hunger.

my experience with meds that are 5ht2c receptor antagonists, when I take them I just get hungry more often. I try to avoid it, but eventually over time feeling hunger more often, I gained like 20 pounds.

Wow, that's a much better response than I got out of my doctor. So is it through those changes that appetite increases and therefore, weight changes?

Thanks for the response. Have you taken Belviq? I might be able to take the two together, so I can finally sleep and be skinny at the same time.

It's not just related to appetite, it's also metabolic. You can eat the same amount of calories in the same way and gain more weight just by taking the pill.

Nah, ive not been taking Belviq. im going t

o try losing weight the old fashioned way first. and i suppose i might understand how it increases hungdr because uve had experience with it.

but for you, taking Belviq could offset some of the positive effects of Remeron, since its effects are opposite from Remeron at the 5ht2c receptor.
stimulation of the 5ht2c receptor has been shown to lead to a decrease in dopamine release.

while antagonists of 5ht2c has been shown to increase dopamine release.

Thanks, when I lose another 15 lbs or so, I'll consider getting on it, but restricting my calories to 1200 and exercising.

Hmm, I don't really get an antidepressant benefit from Remeron or anything else, so maybe it wouldn't hurt to combine the too. I'm pretty sure all antidepressants have no benefit beyond placebo effect. I've tried them all and they have never helped.
