So once again i had an MD mock the use of Metformin in weight gain plagued psychiatric patients...
He said it was tough on the kidneys. Then he proceeded to say that it wasnt effective against weight gain, it only was effective for diabetic obesity.
When i confronted him with opposing evidence, he brought the classic "who is the doctor here" BS.
He went on to say, that if i ruined myself with Metformin, he wouldnt care at which point it was clear to me i needed to change doctors. I have somebody else who gladly prescribes it to me and even talks to my health insurance so they pay the offlabel use. He says Metformin increases compliance and therefore i need to get it.
From what i have heard Metformin is only tough on the kidney if its already compromised.
Im pretty sure its BS and im totally fine, but should i get my kidney checked and my blood glucose level?
I just wanna make sure and i dont want my new Dr get in trouble.

His explanation that it was only inducing weight loss in diabetic patients was, that Metformin is only approved for diabetes.
What a damn douche. "I am the doctor, you know nothing and you are too dumb to read".
A big FU to this attitude.

Metformin is not 'tough on the kidneys' at all; it does not cause damage to the kidneys.
The issue is that metformin cannot be prescribed to patients with kidney failure because it accumulates and may cause adverse effects in this setting.

Yeah well.. im glad i know this one enlightened MD that prescribes it gladly.
Him saying to health insurance that i need the Metformin to be in compliance with my treatment is precisely spot on.
He raised the matter and i couldnt have said it better. The guy is standing up for me no questions asked.
Cool cool guy. If only doctors where all this breed of doctor.. the world would be a much cooler place for everybody.

I find it very threatening to be talking to a doctor and noticing that he eventually wants me to stop taking Metformin.
Even accusing the MD that first prescribed that he made a big mistake.
I am most scared that the unenlightened MD may prevent others to prescribe it for me.Not likely but possible. I hope somebody stands up for the truth in this case. Incompetent ¥$£¥%+!!%*+ !
Why dont those fools just read the f*ck*ng studies and shut up about it? All those studies are wrong, because "im the Dr and you dont know sh*t"? Come on.
I had to vent a little here...

Well i think i have the knowledge now to see if the Dr is a douche.
I will have to end the Dr patient relationship before Dr can cause too much damage. The metformin question is a really good douche detective..

Phil on facebook I suggested that a former poster here on nardil I think take metformin for weight loss. He wrote that it lowers testosterone levels. I didn't think this was true. But any truth to this? Thanks Phillipa

>...should i get my kidney checked and my blood glucose level?
A blood test for kidney function is recommended before starting metformin, and at intervals during treatment. Metformin does not damage the kidneys, that is not the reason for the test. The reason is that metformin is eliminated by the kidneys. Although it is officially not recommended to prescribe metformin even where mild kidney impairment is present, some doctors do use (reduced doses) of metformin in this setting. The risk of adverse effects has probably been exaggerated. Metformin is never recommended when moderate to severe kidney failure is present, because your body would not be able to eliminate it.
Tests for glucose levels should be performed intermittently to check for diabetes in overweight pts taking antipsychotics. Bear in mind, metformin does not reduce blood glucose to below normal.
