Luvox (fluvoxamine) is not approved for depression in the USA. That might have something to do with it. However, it is approved for OCD. It really works for this indication. Luvox can be sedating. This might be another reason why it is not normally used for depression. Rightly or wrongly, it is not thought of being as effective for depression as the other SSRIs.

Interestingly, Luvox came to market in Europe as an antidepressant before Prozac was approved in the USA. Luvox was originally called clovoxamine when it was first being researched. I'm not sure why they changed the name. In 1982, a drug called zimelidine came out in Europe that predated Luvox, and was the world's first SSRI. It was discontinued because of a potentially fatal side effect (Guillain-Barré syndrome).

I continue to take the fluvoxamine 25mg can't go off someone mentioned melatonin is somehow related to this med. Maybe this is the sleepiness. But at 250mg had more energy than I ever did in my life. Phillipa

In Europe it is used to treat psychotic depression as monotherapy.

I was on it for about a year. It was better for my depression than my OCD. Helped me sleep and wasn't sedated at all from it.

I agree on luvox although didn't take CR version 11 years now. And there is something that won't allow me to stop this silly low dose. Phillipa

Right now, are you bothered by anxiety, depression, or OCD?

Such situations can even cause treatment breakthrough. Treatment breakthrough is not a good thing It is a return of symptoms despite uninterrupted treatment. It is not necessarily an indicator of total relapse or poop-out. Very often, breakthrough can be treated by adjusting the treatment or reducing the stress.

I take it, but it doesn't do anything for my depression or related insomnia. The only reason I still take it is because the withdrawal even from reducing a dose is horrific. Luvox makes it very difficult to lose weight and I've gained about 40 lbs on it, but other than that I haven't had any real side effects.
