My primary care doctor wants me off Risperdal because my weight is getting out of control. I have been taking it for 10+ years for sleep, currently on 1 mg. He wants me to stop cold turkey and take ambient instead. When I have accidentally missed one dose in the past, I was up all night with insomnia, jitters, severe anxiety and tremors, so I am nervous about stopping suddenly. Does anyone have any advice about getting off Risperdal?

Many people have withdrawal symptoms when discontinuing APs. You should be able to do it much more comfortably if you go down by, say, .25 every few weeks, or a similiar schedule.

Like Twinleaf said, you can reduce in steps of 0.25mg every few weeks. Do not stop abruptly. It is not sensible to stop any potent psych med abruptly unless there is an urgent reason to do so.
You can start Ambien before you stop Risperdal. That shouldn't be a problem at all.

You were probably not having withdrawal symptoms, rather a return of symptoms.
Do you have any other anxyolitics you can take? Preferably something in the benzodiazapine class...
