i've taken vistiril many times, it's an antihistimine...they gave me it at the psych hospital first thing i got in there....it's not as effective as benzos, i have to say that, but yes it will calm down anxiety but it's basically in the same class of the antihistimine in Tylenol PM for sleep over the counter....
it's called hydroxyzine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxyzineit's a vary doctor friendly medication, they prescibe it at mental health hospitals alot.....
but seriously in my view....don't switch, klonopin is much more potent than hydroxyzine, it would be a better thing if you added hydro..to klonopin...the anxiety would definetly lower

probably not. They work entirely differently. I think you could add hydroxyzine (atarax, vistaril) to ongoing bezo treatment, but it won't do much to help taper or replace the tranquilizer. Sorry :-(

I've taken vistiril or hydroxyzine as an antihistamine mainly for sleep. It knocks me out. I guess if you're asleep you don't feel anxious? Klonopin works better for me during the day.

Joe, I so understand how you are feeling with the anxiety. I was taking 600mg of Trileptal (kinda like Tegrotol) and it helped with my anxiety. But now I've stopped taking it and I feel like I'm going to crawl out if my skin.
I also take 1-3mg a day of Klonopin for anxiety, which does help.
I was taking Geodon, which didn't help with anxiety, but helped perk me up. I also worry about the diabetic issues with Geodon (an atypical).
I'm kind of in between meds right now but fear I'm might need to go back to Trileptal for the anxiety relief alone.
Have you checked with your doc on upping the Tegrotol and Klonopin?

i don't know about your doctor, because doctors are picky about some drugs, but xanax xr would be good for you, alrazolam has antidepressant effects...i've taken xan xr before...it's good
it's 24 hour release
good luck

I think tegretol reduces benzo levels. Have you tried trileptal?

Hydroxyzine releives anxiety by blocking the 5HT2A receptors (nore that just antiistamine drowsiness)
It cant sbstitute for benzos, as its mode of action is completely different
I know RJ doesnt like it becauuse it doesnt have the "kick" of a benzo, in a blind controlled study of GAD, ydroxyzine performed as well as bromazepam
In panic./agrophoibia, it is less usefull

I take hydroxizine about once a day and it does help a bit but it is NOT a substitute for a benzodiazepine! The drug does not hit the benzo receptors in the brain at all and I have no idea if it could help you in tapering the klonopin.
Withdrawal symptoms will come if you try to substitute Vistoril for Klonopin.

If you want to painlessly taper Klonopin (or any other benzo) google "the ashton protocil"
The basic principal is that you convert your current benzo do diazepam, and get your dose dispensed in 2mg tablets, then reduce the dose by half a tablet (1mg) per week
