I told my shrink I own a lot of guns LOL

Posted by LostBoyinNC45 on February 21, 2014, at 12:06:11

I thought some of you might be interested in this. Last year, with the big push from the anti-gunner politicians to pass a bunch of super strict, draconian gun control laws, it stressed me out bad. I am an NRA member and also a member of the even more pro-gun Gun Owners of America (GOA) and have been for decades. Basically, I was part of the gun culture before I even developed severe mental health problems. And stayed part of the gun culture even while severely depressed, although for about ten years I totally lost interest in guns but I attribute that to the severe level of depression I had. After I got on CPAP therapy, I began feeling a lot better overall and a lot of my old interests from pre-depression days came back strong.

I had access to guns the entire time Ive been seeing shrinks, but NEVER talked about it. They never asked and I never brought it up.

Anyway, after obama was elected in 2008, I speculated he might try to pull some stunt in his second term. And damned if I was not 100% dead on correct. So during obama's first term, I went out and bought even more guns, including a couple semi-automatic rifles that are look a like military clones (but not the real deal "assault" weapons the anti-gunners like to call them). I figured obama's first term might be my last chance to buy firearms legally, with a history of mental illness. So I CYA and spent beaucoup $$$$$ between late 2008 and 2010 on guns and ammo. Got into high power rifle shooting some, took a lot of gun classes, some taught by the military shooting teams.

Anyway, I never bothered to tell my shrink about it all. But last year, the stress of he anti-gun lobbying was stressing me...it was becoming a mild issue for me. So I just came out and told him I own guns. He already knew about my hunting guns before, he knew I hunt deer some already. Never acted like he cared at all, even thought it was kinda cool.

So now, he knows all about it and is cool with it. I can openly talk about guns and the Second Amendment with my psychiatrist!! LOL He does not care. So, Im crazy and depressed and take meds and all and own a bunch of guns and my shrink could care less. LMAO

Only in America...this really is a free country. I will defend the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights to the day I die.

Oh my! What a touchy subject. popcorn.gif

I am glad to hear that your personal stance on guns has not effected your quality of care! This is the standard all PDOCs should live up to when dealing with patients that they know are not crazy. If the patient is not deemed psychotic, I do not personally believe that gun policy should be a pertinent mental health issue.

A patient should not feel afraid to discuss any personal hobby with their PDOC. I feel patients may think if they share their gun hobby, they will get "red-flagged" which may make it harder for them to obtain guns or even change their therapy.

Gun ownership does not make someone crazy; the PDOC should already know if someone is "crazy", and they should already be treating that person with the proper course of treatment relevant to that person's mental health condition. A gun is merely a tool designed for a purpose, it indicates nothing about the user.

There is a can of worms, however. How do you judge whether or not to make an issue over a patient, who is seeing you for mental health issues after all, is a risk due to their gun ownership? I believe you should not be able to assess any risk to the general public based upon gun ownership alone until other factors related to gun ownership arise such as fixation, target practice on human photos, those sorta things happen-- gun ownership alone does not warrant any "red-flags".

I must say, it is so awesome that you're getting some of your old interests back! This means you're getting better. Your PDOC must be doing something right. But, you know who is really doing most of the work? You. People underestimate the severity of mental health issues and how much a triumph it is to overcome them. Congratulations on your progress thus far; keep up the good work!

May I ask, what medications are you prescribed? Are you satisfied with your current regiment? Are there any symptoms occurring that are not alleviated? I can make recommendations regarding your medication that you bring up with your PDOC, if you like. I'm one of those people that, not to be pretentious, "knows their stuff", lol. See my thread here about the SNRI Switcharoo if you're curious about my own personal meds.

Basically, the reason why I asked about your meds is because helping people out with their medication is a hobby of mine. But, we share hobbies too. Like guns. :)

I too hunt deer (not this year, the paper company came and cut down all the trees at my lease). Additionally, I like to fish (my Bass Tracker is my baby). But, in the summer time, my Tahoe is my baby, lol. I like to target practice with my Matthews in the backyard (wish I could practice with my guns, but that's a bit loud in the neighborhood, don't ya think!? haha). And, I have a an old, old Honda 4-wheeler that I might use once a year. Like you, I <3 the outdoors.

Also like you, I love the United States! Every single state. But, haha, you sound a bit more, how do I say this?, right-wing?, than I do. I'm more of a blue Libertarian with a few Republican ideas (mostly guns) scattered in here and there. I'm all over the place politically, but I have a lot of Republican -- and Democrat -- and Libertarian -- and hippy -- and New Age -- well, you get the point, friends. So welcome to the club, buddy.

Have a good one, Eric!

The issue, the reason I brought up the fact I own firearms to my shrink, is this. I was STRESSED OUT last winter and early spring because of comrade obama's push for gun control. You need to understand that I have always been very pro-Second Amendment...I am old school in that I dont even believe in background checks. I believe it should be the way it was before the clinton's were elected in the early nineties, before 94, you could buy firearms without a NICS background check.

What went on last year from December 2012 thru April 2013 was stressful for me as an NRA member and as a Second Amendment advocate.

So I wanted to talk about that stress with my Pdoc last winter and spring. But to do that I had to bring up the fact I own firearms and am part of the gun culture, despite having a history of severe depression.

As far as meds, I just take SSRIs. CPAP therapy for sleep apnea has made as much of a difference in my mental health, mood, etc. as any psychiatry drug. Before CPAP, I was on the "medication merry go round" for about ten years and that does not work. Im very pro-med, but none of the meds worked well for me except for MAOIs.

My medication regimen is very simple and much less complicated than most on here. Its the CPAP therapy PLUS SSRI that has helped me. I have no desire to change my medication regimen...at all.

As far as my political views, yeah I tilt towards the ring wing. I cant stand obama and his progressive leftists who demand other people to pay for people who have absolutely nothing wrong with them, yet refuse to work...people on welfare longterm. I also do believe obama is trying to destroy America, but thats a whole other story not for this forum and has nothing to do with medications or psychiatry.

I also need to point out the shrink I "dumped" this on is someone who knows me pretty well and I have been her patient for a long time. And she is real big on Constitutional rights as well and I thought she could handle it. There are many shrinks I would have refrained from telling it as I believe many would not be able to deal with it.

BTW, a psychiatrist can do jack to interfere with your Second Amendment rights unless they involuntarily commit you to a mental hospital or to involuntarily outpatient commitment. And that requires a Judge and a courtroom. So I was not worried about it as Ive never been involuntarily committed for anything, despite a long history of very severe clinical depression. Ive also never been adjudicated a mental defective, which is one of the NICS questions.

Oh yeah, the other reason I wanted to bring it up and "open up that door" was due to the fact that had the gun control legislation push been successful last year, it would have likely made it illegal or very very difficult for anyone seeing a shrink or taking meds to legally purchase or possess firearms.

I wanted to get it on the record formally, on paper, that firearms was a big part of my life. That it helped my mood and was one of my hobbies. I like to reload as well. Reloading is very therapeutic for me. And had that gun control legislation passed, I was foreseeing lawsuits against the gun control legislation. I wanted it to be known to my shrink that my guns and ammo hobby/sport helped me to deal with my clinical depression and taking that away would have made my clinical depression worse. And I would sue over that. And I wanted all that on paper, on my psych records.

I think the only cause for a doc any doc to be concerned is if you threatened to shot yourself. Good to have guns for protection. Not saying more about it. Phillipa

I have a friend of 33 years and he has been into guns his whole life.
i could find a gun, any gun, and ask, what is this? he knows everything about guns.
unfortunately, with obama, his racist streak emerged one night he was going on and on about the president. i said,r, if you could get a clear shot and knowing you would never be questioned would you shoot him. hell yeah. you remember that he has a wife and two daughters. didn't phase him.
he is very smart and a good guy but i finally said i'm not going to listen to your sh*t if all you are now is a one trick pony and a racist *ssh*l*.
one night he said america will never be the same. really, do you mean a bunch of fat *ss r*dn*cks with jobs beating blacks at night? friend America has never been what you want it to go back to.
i agree that taking guns away from law abiding people will not stop columbine shootings. if i had a wife and kids and was on the road a lot i'd rather she be trained and armed. the nra guy said something that i've said before. your wife with a daughter in the next room hears glass breaking. she is scared X100. would you like a gun or a broom handle? get your gun and before you shoot say your picked the wrong house tonight.
my friend has an enormous gun safe. when i was diagnosed bipolar 12 years ago i asked him to hold my guns. it would be nice to have my .38 but i might use it on the wrong person. for me it's not good to have a gun. the parents with little kids then lose them to a maniac deserve to be heard if they are anti gun, i'm not sure i blame them, they are americans too. but you never hear about an nra member doing these things.
i told my friend, you are smart and you can write. write obama with your concern. if you want me at your house listening to rush Limbaugh spouting bs and you eat it up, find another friend. because according to all of these right wing guys, the left has never done one thing right, nothing ever . it's never black and white, or maybe it is.
i used to get chain emails all the time. i would read them then go to two websites that follow these things. no truth whatsoever or true. I started replying to 'all' and saying here are the links to two websites, both say this email has been going for two years, it's not true. if you want to send this crap would you mind verifying it first? no more emails.
i grew up in south texas and nobody had issues with guns. people would have guns if their rifle racks in their pickups at school. my how things changed.
guns=fine racism=grow up gun + mental illness=your call i hope you're right.
i called a guy i knew in high school after his sister, who i dated, told me he was bipolar and not well. we talked for two hours. at one point he said phil i talked to my sister last night for 40 minutes. yeah? i had my
.38 pointed at my head the whole time. i said do you feel you need that gun right now? i'll never get rid of my gun.

Um, yeah.

My original post was about how the anti-gunner political movement last winter and early Spring was stressing me out, badly. And how I thought it was unAmerican and I wanted to discuss the stress the gun control movement was causing me, with my shrink.

As a person who actually believes in the Constitution and ALL of the Bill of Rights, including the 2A, I very much look down on Americans who want to give up ANY of their Constitutional rights and freedoms. To be blunt, that irritates the hell out of me.
