Question about Trileptal/Lamictal?

Posted by Sheilac on February 17, 2014, at 15:33:07

I saw my pdoc last week and because Trileptal is causing terrible swelling & pain she added a very low dose of Depakote, which promptly made me lower than depressed. Just awful.

I've gotten 2 diff opinions on Trileptal. My pdoc says to take the lowest dose that won't cause pain & swelling and the neurologist I saw several months ago says to take more. I don't understand. I would think more would cause more pain & swelling? Any thoughts?

In the meantime, my pdoc said to stop Depakote and add a low dose of Lamictal for depression. Bam! It worked immediately. But as I recall in the past when I tried Lamictal by itself with nothing else, I was hypomanic and it never calmed me down. I got up to 100mg and was still crazy.

The Trileptal is helping me sleep at night and the low dose of Lamictal is great for depression, but when does the switch happen that Lamictal will help with mixed state? When will it stop making me hyper?

My pdoc didn't recommend taking Depakote with Lamictal. Not sure why. She preferred Trileptal & Lamictal.

I wish I could just take Trileptal without the swelling & pain.

Any thoughts on this? I'm holding out hope that I don't get the weird mouth issues with Lamictal as I did in the past.

Why is Trileptal causing the joint pain & swelling? This is all very frustrating!

>Is Trileptal causing joint pain and swelling? Have you had other possibilities checked out - arthritis, etc? What do your docs think about this. Remember, correlation doesn't mean causation. It could be that you have some joint problem unrelated to trileptal which just happened to come on around the same time you were using trileptal. Also, didn't you take trileptal successfully for some time without these symptoms?

When I go up on the dose the pain & swelling come on. When I back off the dose the pain & swelling go away. The pain & swelling is particularly bad in my feet, so bad that at higher doses of Trileptal it's painful at the end of the day when I take my shoes off. I feel cripple.

My doc has ruled out arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. My MD doc feels there is a corolation between the anti seizure med and the swelling & joint pain.

Looking back, I noticed pain with Trileptal within a few weeks of taking it, but I just ignored it. It just got worse over the past few years.
