Mostly have heard of it in reference to a child constantly being brought to the hospital. Seems the Mother usually does something to cause whatever the problem is to reoccur for attention I think. Not sure. A google search would explain more thoroughly. Phillipa

yes. only in psychiatry does *believing you are ill* get to count as actually being ill.

though, perhaps you don't get to choose what illness to have, to be fair.
it is listed in the DSM. at least... was last time i looked. it is possible there has been revision to it for the most recent edition that came out last year.
while it is included in the DSM... i think the main reason for its inclusion is to do with considering it as part of a differential diagnosis.

so... if someone is discovered to be causing some of their own symptoms (by taking poisons or whatever) on the hospital ward... they get to call psychiatry.

Münchausen syndrome is a psychiatric factitious disorder wherein those affected feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma to draw attention, sympathy, or reassurance to themselves. It is also sometimes known as hospital addiction syndrome, thick chart syndrome, or hospital hopper syndrome. True Münchausen syndrome fits within the subclass of factitious disorder with predominantly physical signs and symptoms, but in addition they also have a history of recurrent hospitalization, travelling, and dramatic, untrue, and extremely improbable tales of their past experiences

ps. Münchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP or MBP) is a term that is used to describe a behavior pattern in which a caregiver deliberately exaggerates, fabricates, and/or induces physical, psychological, behavioral, and/or mental health problems in those who are in their care. With deception at its core, this behavior is an elusive, potentially lethal, and frequently misunderstood form of child abuse or medical neglect that has been difficult to define, detect and confirm.
