I'm surprised to see only 11% taking SSRI's as seems that almost everyone I talk to is taking an SSRI. Maybe I'm talking to the wrong people? Maybe people get involved in casual conversations cause they take SSRI's. Used to be no one talked about med taking. Now it seems the opposite. Phillipa

91% accuracy for predicting SSRI suicide risk. Wow, that's amazing.
Wish it would have been available when I needed it!
Whatever that gene, I'm pretty sure mine is bad. :-)

It would seem if they can figure out what genetic markers to look for that show 91% accuracy that an SSRI could induce suicidal thoughts, then they'd also be able to develop an accurate test showing someones depression will remit in response to an SSRI.

They've been fishing around in the dark with the antidepressant game for too long now, nice to see someone is bringing some light to antidepressant roulette. But in my opinion, there's still a lot of advancement needed to bring depression treatment up to an acceptable standard.

A couple of questions.....

1) Was the study done with antidepressants of different classes? In other words, does their cohort of genes react to antidepressants of different classes? One might think that genetic reaction to say Prozac would be very different from that of wellbutrin, or mirtazapine....or even non-antidepressant substances with antidepressant qualities (Seroquel, lithium etc).

2) I wonder if the genes are truly a reaction to the particular antidepressant and its purported mechanisms, or simply genes that predispose to elevated suicidality in general. Was baseline suicidality taken into account? Maybe these indivudals are just more reactive, or chemically sensitive.

Funny that its 10% taking SSRI's - in the 70's it was 10% taking benzos on a daily basis
