Have you ever tried hydroxyzine? (Atarax/Vistaril)
That is an antihistamine which is used
in the ER for acute mania. Although I
don't have bipolar disorder it definitely
slowed down my thoughts and made
me feel calm without feeling drugged
when I was in the ER for acute anxiety. My thoughts really speed up when I'm
a nervous wreck.

Actually, I liked Depakote. I took 125-250mg. It worked very well for improving anxiety, racing mind and sleeping patterns.
The main downside was some degree of cognitive dulling, but this was reduced by taking in the late afternoon.
Higher doses were more depressing - I couldn't go up.

My experience with depakote is consistent with linkage. My dose was higher though, at 500mg, and a short while at 1000mg but that was too much.
Cognitive dulling a little bit, and sometimes a random sleepy wave, but other than that I actually thought depakote was a pretty good drug for the racing overstimulated symptoms you described.I have a friend whos racing thoughts bother her a lot, her doc gave her depakote, it works, she likes it, she didn't complain of any side effects.
It does look like she gained a couple pounds maybe. Depakote can put on the weight with some people. I think I only gained a couple pounds on it.
This is the end of the thread.
