A musician from Austin, roky erickson, is one of the pioneers of psychedelic rock in the '60's. he was diagnoseed with paranoid schizophrenia and first went to a mental institution in houston then to Rusk hospital for the criminally insane. forced ect forced thorazine, repeat. when he finally got out he weaned off his meds, bought a car and voted for the first time. I'm glad he's well and touring but I have to ask, why not me? the dumping meds part.

I read about a subgroup of patients diagnosed with Schizophrenia back in the day...some of these people would keep an Rx of whatever (probably Thorazine) on hand and take it for a while when they had symptoms. The rest of the time, they were just normal people in the community, with no medication.

Interesting. I think my enemies are, well depression first. this could get complicated. When i got on meds 30 years ago i had serious anxiety. My doctor now thinks i was manic on my first med, amitriptyline.

Phil so you are saying you might not be bipolar? I once became hypomanic and told the pdoc when on luvox 200mg. She didn't believe me said I was just feeling good for first time in life. In all my life I'd never gotten up at 6am and wanted to. Soon as went down it dose it went away. And I am not bipolar? Phillipa

No, I'm bipolar because that 30 day period in 2004 I can't explain away. Plus things my current doctor sees.
I'm just in one of my gee I'd love to be off meds moods.

Considering the amount of LSD the 13th Floor Elevators apparently took, perhaps his schizophrenic break was less genetic and more externally mediated? Maybe this gave him a better chance at recovery than those of us who have been struggling with our mental health issues since birth. I know mine are deeply, deeply rooted in biology and how my mother parented me.
