New antidepressants?

Posted by Roslynn on December 26, 2013, at 12:19:29

Hi,

I thought I heard that there might be some new antidepressants in the pipeline possibly coming out in 2014. Does anyone know?

Thank you,
Roslynn

Vortioxetine is the highly anticipated new compound that has now almost passed all trials and is expected to hit the shelves soon.
It seems to still bear SRI qualities to it but also modulates individual serotonin receptors to much more complicated degree than current pharmaceuticals. All in all it has shown to be effective for mood, anxiety and cognition. And cause very little weight gain and reduced sexual side effects.

The price of this new pill is however expected to be high as with all new meds.

Brintillex isn't much of a "stand out" Med to me. They're just going to keep beating this dead horse. The whole neurotransmitter reuptake/antagonism needs to be replaced with something new and better. With meds that have a clinically significant effect. Maybe that Med will be one in clinical trials by the chemical name of NSI-189. It directly increases neurogenesis, unlike current meds, which are thought to do this is a downstream effect from its mechanism of action.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSI-189

But if its shown to work, it could still be about 10 years away from being available to the public. Man, I wish Clinical Trials were looked at on the same level of national importance as national security. Where thousands of men were putting in time to research and conduct them in order to get new, possibly life saving medications to those in need ASAP! Right now Clinical Trials can take 15 years. T would be beautiful to see that cut down to 5.

Maybe, maybe not. Working through serotonin is not a bad strategy. It's just that the plain reuptake strategy has been still quite unselective in a therapeutic sense. The more selective a med is with serotonin receptors, the more selective is the response. I wouldn't discount Brintellix yet.

I started Brintellix 10mg 7 days ago. So far no real side effects. Doc warned me that main side effect is nausea, and suggested I take it with largest meal of the day to avoid that side effect, and so far it has worked. I'm very pleased so far, because typically I have a hard time starting new ADs. I am concerned about cost though - right now I am on samples, so I have no idea how much it will cost once I have to start paying for it.

I am doing ok so far - 3 weeks total now. I increased from 10 mg to 20 mg 6 days ago. I had about a week of constipation, but increased my fiber intake and that has resolved itself. I am feeling a little bit more anxious the last couple of days and my sleep has been crappy, but that could be due to my continued tapering off of benzos, rather than the Brintellix. I did have a hard time finding a pharmacy that had any brintellix in stock though. And it is pretty expensive. But other than that, no side effects and I am going to continue to stick it out and see what happens.

Sorry to hear that anxiety has kicked in but I think you're correct that it is most likely the benzo withdrawal that is causing it. Are you doing a super slow taper I hope off your benzos so it doesn't interfere with the big change of starting a new anti depressant? Hang in there my fingers are crossed for you.
