remeron sleep

this is crazy, I can literally scrape a piece the size of a pin head off a 15 mg remeron tab and sleep deeply all night long but still be hungover for hours into the next day?? How can this tiny speck be so potent? I don't like next day sedation but sleep so well~

It is crazy. I have no idea why. 15mg didn't even tire me? Add the benzos and you would think I'd have been hung over too. Phillipa

Marcus, same here. Sleep very deeply from a sliver of remeron. Feel hungover at first, but I drink a cup of coffee, one of green tea, then hike 4 mi. Hangover gone! But I dont take everynight, unless Im on vacation, then I do, and never feel hungover. I guess I just get real hyped up on vacation, but I sleep well with the added remeron.

Does that low of a dose cause weight gain. I used to take Remeron many years ago and it was the only med that provided me with deep sleep. I had to discontinue it due to the increase in weight.
However, I wonder if I just took a tiny dose would the weight creep back up.

Marcus,

What is your current dosage and how long have you been taking it?

I took Remeron over ten years ago and it was a life saver. The weight gain however, was horrible. I gained over 20 lbs in a month. Lately, I have been thinking of asking my doctor if I should take it as a sleep aid @ a lower dose instead of ambien and benzos, which do nothing for me. I'm just terrified of the weight gain. Do you tend to gain weight easily or have gained weight from meds like seroquel, zyprexa ect.?

when i took 7.5mg remeron everyday, i gained weight & looked puffy. i was on 25mg zoloft at same time & .5mg klonopin. I admit my diet was crappy but i was hiking 4 mi a day. my pdoc said it was the remeron, so i tapered off of it & zoloft just to be sure. i lost all the weight & now only take .5mg k with the occ sliver remeron for sleep. i havnt gaind weight just doing it this way. i hate not feeling fit, so i had to taper for my sanity! thank god just the k works for me.

>How can this tiny speck be so potent?

Mirtazapine has extremely high affinity for histamine H1 receptors. Its sedative antihistamine effect therefore occurs even at very low doses and does not increase when the dose is increased beyond a certain point because the H1 receptors in the brain are already saturated. Much higher doses are needed for depression as opposed to sleep because blocking H1 receptors does not exert an antidepressant effect... and mirtazapine's action on other receptors only occurs at higher doses.

Unfortunately, because mirtazapine is relatively long-acting, it does tend to cause a 'hangover' effect. Antihistamines with a shorter duration of action such as diphenhydramine (original Benadryl) may cause less hangover, but may not be as potent at inducing sleep as mirtazapine.
