Psychostimulants .. suspected bipolar

Posted by BygoneBeSpade on October 23, 2013, at 9:37:26

Are psycostimulants added to divalproex er a good idea for suspected bipolar consisting of severe depression, severe agitation and destructive (objects) rage episodes + affective instability (severe crying episodes and severe irritability)? Would it help depression without destabilizing the rage issue?

(I was on Risperidone 3mg. Now since today I have started Divalproex ER 500mg once daily hoping it will help the rage. I have taken it once before years ago but stopped due to it not helping that much at 500mg, but that's a low dose, so this time I want to get to a therapeutic level. So I want to know if a stimulant for depression can be added in the future.)

I wanted to add that I'm stopping risperidone (slowly) because of side effects, though it helps symptoms perfectly..

When I tried Dexedrine the first time and low-dose escitalopram it caused horrible anxiety. Dexedrine in combination with buprenorphine (as far as I remember), made me irritable. And I haven't had problems with rages when non-medicated.

Generally not a good idea. Stimulants are known to make cycling worse. Even those without bipolar usually have to experience a mood crash daily.
I'm kinda bipolar 2 and wish Ritalin or dex would consistently provide the mood and motivation help I get for a few hrs if I haven't taken them for a while. But the depression crash and roller coaster weren't worth it.
Adderall really made me cycle all over the place.
That sucks that you have to go through such extreme emotions. Everyone reacts differently to meds, but stimulants may be dangerous territory with your symptoms.

My quick story on agitation: almost every med makes it worse (except ssri's). However I think lamictal is what has eased it. Still have found no help with depression, but I am glad I have some agitation relief.
