Having some outpatient surgery the surgeon prescribed this new pain med that is less addictive than opiods and causes less constipation. Called Nacynta. I wrote this to a friend and he said I can get Serotonin Syndrome with it as take 25mg of luvox & 2.5mg of Lexapro. Do you feel I'm safe? As am now 67. What I was thinking was a good thing now I'm afraid. Please respond. Sincerest of thanks. Phillipa

Was told by his RN that he doesn't prescribe anything with opiods due to war on meds. I took the scripts to the pharmacist today. She didn't even know it wasn't compatible. Till I told her I heard this. So she looked it up in computer. Said no way can I take this med as contraindicated with even low dose of any SSRI. So now she is calling herself the surgeon. She said he would have to order another med. So I figure coming from a CVS pharmacist who was given the sheet of meds to fill that he would know not drug seeking? So many of his patients get upset when no med like Percocet available. Also can't have asa or motrin in it for bleeding purposes. Thanks Phillipa

ugh. what's with the war on meds where you live? Around here, its not free-and-easy, but its not all tightly controlled, either. Fairly reasonable prescribing, from what I've heard. There were a couple pill mills around, but they got shut down (different part of the state, btw).

No idea and we are only a few hours away from each other? Maybe cause he said less constipation but the website for the med lists it as side effect? Phillipa

Nucynta is tapentadol, which is an opioid like all others. It's basically a new tramadol, but without the serotonergic component. It's indeed marketed as causing less tolerance, but I don't buy that for a second. It's an opioid, period. Including possibility of addiction. It only costs much more, of course.

yeah, I just looked it up. Wow. Expen$ive, and still a schedule II.
Why not some good ole fashion oxycodone or morphine or something? Maybe Phillipa's docs just got visited by a friendly drug rep...

Good point and going to cancel the surgery as elective and don't feel like taking a risk of intubation, Pulmonary embolism (killed my Mother), scars, and no guarantees. And If I had a problem where I required hospitalization my insurance wouldn't pay it as elective and sure don't have the money. Why do I put myself into situations like this? Phillipa

Would be safest to ask him for a standard narcotic (Vicodin, Percacet) plus ibuprofen
You would likely only need the narcotic for 3 days or so for outpatient surgery, so addiction isnt an issue, after that, ibuprofen should be adequate

Jono cancelled the surgery wasn't worth all the risks and since I had to pay out of pocket and if any complications and had to go inpatient insurance doesn't cover so would lose all. So they are supposed to refund the money since call 6 days or more before the surgery I'm relieved that I did too. Phillipa
