Anyone ever get gout from their meds?
I didn't have a problem until I went back to Geodon - 80mg for a little over a week. Now I'm left with gout!
I think it can be a small side effect, but I'm afraid my regular MD is going to want me off AAPs due to all the side effects.
I've dropped back to 40mg. Don't feel as stable, but I'm afraid 80mg might have caused the gout.
I've never had gout and am used to being active everyday.
I can't believe this. The podiatrist said a lot of meds can contribute to gout!
What now? Down to 20mg and off Grodon and on to the next?
Maybe a low dose of Lamictal for depression won't cause gout.
Very upset and frustrated.

Aggggg! Gout is a rare, but a noted side effect! Geez.
Maybe the neurologist will have some input. I cant stand these side effects.
Any my foot is killing me! I'm beginning to hate meds!

Have you been diagnosed as having gout in the past?

No, I've never been diagnosed with gout before. This is a new one one me. I don't know if it makes your body more acidly, but when I zoomed up from 20 to 80mg of Geodon, my lips started breaking out in cancker sores, kinda line with Lamictal, so I just used a lot of moisturizer.
Over the week - 10 days, my feet, especially my left one got increasingly more painful near the ball and big toe. On top and underneath the foot. Not planter fasciitis. I figured the pain would go away so I bought orthopedic shoes (cute ones!) and my husband massaged my feet. Yesterday, I couldn't even get my shoes on I was in so much pain!
The mistake the doc said I made was icing my feet. He gave me a shot near my left big tie. It feel 75% better, and told me to take anti-inflammatories. My uric level acid is fine, but he said that's not entirely unusually. He said it can be heredity, diet, dehydration along with a lot of medications. He's alone calling me in a med to guard against future gout attacks & spreading to other joints.
He asked for a list of meds, because he said a lot of meds can cause gout, even aspirin. Geodon has a small risk of it - and let's face it, I'm the side effects queen. I'm very sensitive to meds!
He told me to talk to my doc about maybe tapering and changing meds - if that has been (and it was) the only med change over the past 2 weeks.
Also, the dehydration from Adderall contributed to it. It's important to drink tons of water with gout. Something I wasn't doing while on Geondon & Adderall. I can go go all day without food and drink on Adderall. I was too busy to stop. Maybe instead of Adderall (which makes me unstable), I just have some afternoon caffeine with lunch! Probably safer. Not as potent :(
Ibuprofen liquid gel caps & baking soda in some water helped with the pain and acidity.
My next option with my pdoc is low dose Lamictal (but I've have mouth cancker sores with that in the past), or going back to Buspar for daytime depression and sticking with Trileptal.
Only issues I have with Trileptal is bad, blurry vision - I can barely read. But it keeps me stable. I may have to stagger the dose. But I cannot give up Trileptal. Stability is very important.
So, I will discuss all this with my pdoc soon. For now, since I tapered to 40mg, I am tapering back to 20mg Geodon. Still sleeping like a rock!

2nd doc said I actually have a broken bone in my foot and do not have gout.
But, in the meantime I dropped down to 20mg of a Geodon and used my Trileptal.
I'm frustrated with the vision problems with Trileptal. I hate not being able to see anything! It really effects my vision.
I miss the 80mg of Geodon. I miss the stability and niceness.
I know I've made a lot (too many), changes. But I'm angry and irritable.
I can't stand myself!
It makes me want to drop the Trileptal and go back to 80mg Geodon.
I just don't know if that's safe.
Maybe I'm just experiencing withdrawal.
Maybe I need to stick with the 40mg of Geodon, use the Trileptal and Klonopin and stick with it until I see the doc in 2 weeks.
I may go nuts by then!

Sheilac there is a condition called pseudogout also. Uric acids are high in true gout. Yes there is a med to prevent future attacks of gout. Urecholine I think is the name of the med for true gout. And boy that conditions hurts badly. Phillipa
