Never Give Up

Posted by Meatwood_Flack on May 20, 2013, at 15:45:06

Several of the regular visitors to this site are probably familiar with my story, but for those who are not, I will offer a brief overview. For the past 15 months I have struggled with a severe depressive episode that included 8 different fao;ed antidepressant and antipsychotic trials, which culminated in my hitting rock bottom in a way that I'd rather not discuss, but most of you can probably guess what I'm referring to. Following this, I entered inpatient treatment for one week, during which time the psychiatrist on weekend duty started me on the first TCA I'd ever been prescribed in nearly a year and a half-Amitriptyline. The next day, after a half hour consultation with my assigned psychiatrist, he removed the Amitriptyline and put me on Depakote, Neurontin, as well as Remeron and Ambien for sleep issues. Within four days, I found myself in a better place than I've been in a year and a half and, so far, the recovery has remained. I am not exaggerating when I say for the past six months I firmly believed I would never live to see my next birthday because I didn't believe I could deal with the pain that much longer. That man is gone, and I am back. I understand anything can happen at any moment, but this moment is all I have and in this moment I have never felt so relieved or blessed to have had the grit to hold out until I found my solution. I don't write this to brag, but to encourage. As low as I sank, if I can recover, I believe anyone can, and recovery is my deepest wish for you all.

Meatwood_Flack,

Thank you for sharing the news of your successful treatment with us. It is indeed good to hear from someone on this board who can speak of recovery from a long depressive episode that didn't seem to respond to many treatments. May the weeks and months ahead bring you good things, including but not limited to ongoing mental wellness.

T.

Thank you for posting!

Which one of the drugs would you say is the key player for depression recovery?

Good luck!

That's encouraging. Thanks for sharing! I pray that I can recover from schizo-affective disorder. I know that recovery won't be a cure though.

I read this one story of a guy who took 9000mg of Neurontin by accident. He couldn't figure out which button on the elevator was up or down.

..sounds like fun to me :)

I don't think 15 mg of Remeron would be enough to explain improvement in anything besides my sleep, which has improved, so it's either the Neurontin or the Depakote. It would be strange if I had been bipolar II all this time and being treated for melancholic depression all this time but stranger things have happened. Good luck with your treatment.

Thank you for your reply!
I have read lately that Bipolar meds work wonders on depression when antidepressants just won't cut it. For example Lamictal, also a bipolar med, i researched yesterday and it's said to be the best thing since sliced bread for untreatable depression. Actually it was really hard to find any negative comments on that, specially when used for depression. Bipolars themselves say it's best to be used for depression part of bipolar disorder, not so good for mania. It seems to work in different way than inhibitors.I can get my hand's on Lamictal today so I wan try it out.

Good luck!
