Hello I'm bipolar I and take 2mg risperdal and started lamictal one month ago to help with the depressive end (albeit mild). I've had gum recession issues in the past but since starting lamictal have gotten noticeably worse, especially after increasing to 100mg, now they hurt. My dentist told me lamictal can be rough on your teeth and gums. I'm desperately trying to avoid gum surgery in the future. Has anyone had problems with lamictal like this. What would be a reasonable alternative to lamictal. My pdoc mentioned trileptal as an option but does trileptal help with mild depression? Any suggestions. Thanks for reading!

I didn't know about this as a side effect of lamictal. I did take low doses 150mg of trileptal. I was given it as a booster for mild depression also. No side effects at this low dose. Worth a try. Phillipa

Thanks. I stopped lamictal today and my gum sensitivity vanished so its definitely the cause. Too bad since its been really helpful for my moods. Even low dose trazadone for sleep made me manic so I'm afraid of antidepressants. Anybody else have positive experiences with trileptal for the depressive side of bipolar? Thanks.

How lucky the cause was found by stopping the med with immediate response. I also had problems with lamictal at 50mg couldn't stop producing saliva and spitting. So I stopped and also symptoms did immediately. Phillipa

Actually, I was thinking of trying Lamictal again, but you are right!!!
I had terrible gum and teeth problems with Lamictal. I never got stability on it like a lot of people do.
Trileptal is my med. I take 600mg a day right now and may go up. But it has kept me as normal as I can be for a long time!
When I first tried Lamictal years ago I thought my teeth were going to fall out.
I also use Geodon for depression.
