Hi all, has anyone on this board developed dark pigmentation patches (melasma) on their face after taking Lamotrigine (Lamictal)? I'm mixed race and I think that makes me more prone but it began after about 1 month of treatment. I've read that Lamotrigine binds to melanin in the skin so it would make sense but I can't find it listed as a side effect anywhere??

006,
One thing here is to make sure that what the spots are is not Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrosis. There are cases of this syndrome in people taking Lamictal. It can be a life-time of pain, blindness and disfigurement or death from SJS or TEN.
So don't think twice, and go to someone that can rule-out SJS, such as a hospital that has a burns unit.
SJS starts on the face and trunk, so see if there are spots on your trunk. IT also goes to the membranous tissues. TEN has the skin come off and people die from the infection that gets in.

I feel you should show it to your doc or a dermatologist. Melasa is also called the mask of pregnancy. It's a deepening of color isn't it? Not a rash? If not a rash wouldn't think SJS. How bout a pharmacist they may be able to tell also. Any walk in clinics near you? Another option. Will you let us know what you find out? Phillipa

I should've mentioned I've been on the lamotrigine for 6 years so it's not rash related. I just wanted to know whether anyone else had developed melasma while on this med?

Friends,
It is written here,[...been on Lamictal for 6 years so it is *not rash related*...].
Be not deceived. There are cases of SJS in those that took this drug for 6 years.
Now you parents reading this site to try to decide as to drug your child or not in collaboration with a psychiatrist/doctor, there are prohibitions posted to me here by Mr Hsiung that prevent me from posting educational material that IMHHHO could save the life of your child or prevent a life-time of misery or addiction from these drugs. I ask you to understand that it has been revealed to me that there is a great deception over the world today that was told to happen 3000 years ago, and it is happening now. I ask that when you read the claims about mind-altering drugs that are posted here that are allowed to stand, that you question as to if those claims are true or not before you drug your child in collaboration with a psychiatrists/doctor.
