Hello,
I've recently started the medication Nardil (Phenelzine) and how early can i expect to see benefits?
When it kicks in is it instantaneous or does the relief come gradually?
I've been two weeks at 75mg, only side effect is drowsiness and constipation.
Thanks for your time. /KingYeti

KingYeti,
Hello, and welcome to Psycho-Babble. I took Nardil about seven years ago for what was then a chronic fatigue or vegetative depression, and I would say that the response that I noticed started to surface after I was taking 75 mg of the medication for about two weeks. I wouldn't say that the response I noticed came on instantaneously, but that it was something that I started to notice over the course of a few days. Generally, with antidepressants including Nardil, therapeutic benefits tend to become apparent after four to six weeks, although it's possible to start noticing benefits sooner or possibly even later with Nardil.
There has been some debate on this site concerning whether the initial effect some individuals feel when taking Nardil (which usually begins to take effect a few weeks after the medication is started) is its true effect. Some posters here have said that the initial effect is always a hypomanic response and that the true therapeutic benefits of Nardil take even longer than a few weeks to surface. My own personal opinion is that the initial effect of Nardil could throw some individuals into a hypomanic state, but that the effect may feel like euthymia (a "normal" affective state) for others. Usually, however, it seems that the initial boost that patients notice when taking Nardil doesn't last for more than a few weeks. Of course, it's hard to predict whether or not you'll experience this initial effect of Nardil's or whether your response pattern will be different. Maybe this should go without saying, but everybody responds differently to medications, and your response might not mirror those of other members who've written about taking Nardil on this Web site. But if it does, you might expect to notice an initial boost in mood and energy that might last for a few weeks or so before you start to see how Nardil will affect you in the long run. That response pattern at least seems to be reported quite a bit on this site.
Anyway, thank you for posting here, and please feel free to let me know if you have any questions about what I've written. I wish you luck with your treatment, and I hope that your response to Nardil will go well.

Excellent post by Tomatheus, but I'd still like to hear more user experiences with the medication Nardil.
1. How long did Nardil take to kick in for you, and was it a gradual or instant experience?
2. What side effects did you have; which of these went away and persisted?
3. In what way did it help with your depression/SA?
It is indeed impossible to say how a certain medication will affect me no matter the amount of information gathered, but it could still be useful as a pointer.
Thanks for your input/time Psycho-Babble users!
This is the end of the thread.
